Is anyone else disappointed by ancient and medieval warfare? It was just a bunch of dull sieges and spearmen poking each other. Speaking of spearmen why weren't pikes used instead?

>why weren't pikes used instead?
Pikes are spears, and they were used.
Also nice trips.

What's the point of a spear when you can have a longer pike?

So you can use a shield and fight better individually.

Why the fuck would I give a shit about being a better individual fighter if there is a mob of guys with pikes with me?
>>1295648
You wouldn't.
But then again, you probably don't have a mob of guys with pikes with you in this period, and if by some odd chance that you did they're not likely iron-willed veterans of a dozen wars who will always hold the line with you.
Sieges are fun when it's not just sitting around waiting for everyone to starve.

The longer your spear gets (eventually turning into a pike) the more coordination you need since the entire formation needs to move forward, backwards, turn, etc. together, or the whole thing falls apart and you're mincemeat.
If your army isn't superbly drilled, which is the case for most of history, trying to get the pike wall going in a fluid battle will get you into trouble, since sooner or later you'll leave a gap open somewhere and in come the enemy to fuck you in the ass.

Not all sieges were dull. You should read about Bertrand du Guesclin's sieges. He managed to recover all of France in a short time because he kept using dirty tricks, like for exemple, disgusting his troops as englishmen.
>>1295758
True. Nothing is more disgusting to an Englishman than a Frenchman.
>>1295222
thats because most of the troops were peasants, but there were talented fighters as well. They would be pretty impressive to watch

Except it wasn't
