French is the language of diplomacy. Apart from the fact that it grew to became the most powerful country of Europe, Louis XIV created a great, ambitious court that managed to impress all of Europe. There's also the fact that many great philosophers of the XVII-XVIIIth Century were french (Like the greatest shitposter of all time, Voltaire), and theses philosophers travelled to other courts.

France was the center of civilization and all the royal families were more or less culturally French.
French revolution lead to a lot of exiled nobles who ended up in other courts.
France was simply the cultural capital of Europe and the creator of the Western Civilization.

In the 11th century, the French nobility started expanding beyond its borders. Most notably through the conquest of England in 1066 and through the Crusades starting in 1099, which created a series of French-speaking states in the Levant that Crusaders from all over the West would travel to in the following generations. The House of France also became extremely influential during the 13th century and ended up ruling half the courts of Europe. Around the same time France also became the centre of Western culture. The first great works of Western literature were written in France, and soon works were being written in French even outside France. Gothic art, architecture and science were also based in France, which probably contributed.
All this died down a bit during the Renaissance, but in the 17th century France became the dominant power in Europe again, and more influential than ever.
So basically the answer is French power and influence, which was the strongest for most of Western history.
