Allende apparently had no problem finding a line of capital to run up a deficit to begin with and the opposition only started to have an impact in 1972, so the view that he was about to create a socialist utopia which was stamped out by the CIA is a myth. However his policies were kooky enough to discount the possibility that he was some power hungry opportunist, he may have actually believed his own propaganda.
