We were more-or-less equal, there were of course differences here and there, magyarization almost happened there as well, but every nation has shit in its history
Croatia doesn't have a sizeable Hungarian minority, like every other neighbor, its the only border which were along the ethnic lines
We kinda helped them in the 90's as the Croation weapons in the Yugo war were smuggled from Hungary

Look at the most common Hungarian surnames, 5/10 are of Croatian origin. Most all of the Slavic influence on Hungary comes from Croatia.
Croatia wasn't forced into Magyarisation like everyone else though, it was less harsh since they needed the Croats for their ports.
During the empire times Croatia had a lot of independence and perpetually struggled to maintain it in regards to the bigger and more powerful Hungary. However the internal struggles only strenghtened croatian identity. But these struggles were FAR from being fueled by hatred or contempt and can be seen more in the light of your usual shenanigans. There's no bad blood between Hungary and Croatia, no big war, no clusterfucks of genocide. The border between Hungary and Croatia is huge, and it's just flatlands. It is one of the most stable and oldest borders in Europe. Let that sink in.

Croatians are pretty good neighbours. No hostorical conflicts (we removed a lot of kebab together, based Zrínyi is one of the most celebrated heroes in Hungary), they have a pretty clean country, lots of Hungarian tourists visit Croatia in the summer. Cheaper and far better than our shitty Balaton.
