I was reading a book about the decolonization of India recently called 'Midnight's Furies'. It's pretty good in portraying the actual political leaders as the primary force behind the British leaving India and Pakistan. Jinnah and Nehru both had major grievances against one another and their entire 'muh Kashmir and Punjab' really fucked the political atmosphere between the two nations that is still screwy today.
The books gives this weird portrayal of Gandhi as some weird spiritualist that doesn't eat whenever something bad happens because that seems to work.
Mind you, the majority of Indians loved him, but his assassination by Hindu extremists was more beneficial than him remaining alive because he became a martyr for the Indian nation.
