The Ottomans use to soft rule, like the British. basically, they imposed little law on their subjects, except for taxation and to unify during war.
When they started to decline (as Empires naturally do), they blamed their system. They started trying to be more French in their ways, who used hard rule. This meant the French imposed on their colonies that those colonies were now France first.
The Ottomans tried this, saying people were no longer their ethnic group first, or their religion first. They threw off all the limiters of Islam (which use to function more as a Libertarian system, where Muslim politicians were simply forbidden from certain actions, which is why many historical politicians in the Muslim world tried to push Islam and Muslims out of the political sphere), but this obviously pissed off a lot of people. They lost the balkans, most of their european colonies, all of North Africa, Egypt successfully formed their own Empire in Africa TWICE before the British and French came in and told them to stop (Look up Muhammad Ali).
The Ottomans deserved to fall because they started sucking.
