Savior of Portugal?

Indeed
hardly the last leader of a global imperial power can be called a savior
The Calvin Coolidge of portugal

Salazar was an authoritarian dictator.
Fuck him.

Nothing necessarily wrong with that.
But he was no savior.
>Contrary to popular Western belief, however, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing for all places and people. Not all dictatorships end in misery, and not everyone wants to live in a democracy. “A bad democracy might be worse than a humane dictatorship,” Pinker points out.
>There is no proof that the desire for freedom and democracy is an innate part of human nature, Ezrow says. As long as quality of life remains high and people are allowed to live their lives as they wish, citizens can be completely happy under a dictatorship. Some even become nostalgic for the authoritarian regime after they lose it. “When I was younger, as a student in graduate school, I just assumed that everyone wanted to be living in a democracy,” Ezrow says. “But if you look at survey research in some countries under authoritarian regimes, people are happy.”
>In other words, ending all dictatorships might not be ideal for everyone. As long as leaders avoid the inherent pitfalls of that mode of governance and take their citizens’ wishes into account, dictatorships are simply a different approach for leading a country, one that values order over individual liberties. As Ezrow puts it: “Some cultures may just prefer security and stability over freedom.”
That's not Cristiano Ronaldo
Based Salazar

The smartest dictator that ever lived.
He was right about everything.
>>1198815
he was ok until the 1940's.
He refused to adapt, and dragged the wholy country with him too. Portugal was a third-world shithole, completely isolated by the international community and muddled in a unwinnable war in the African Colonies (militarily in Guinea, politically in all the other places) by the time the coup happened in 1974.
He was no Lee Yuan Kew clearly.

Epic, bro.
I can't wait till the USSR rises again lol :)!
they were so cool, i love communism!
Savior, maybe, but only to an extent. Estado Novo was ingenious, reformed and fixed Portugal's shite economy from the Republican era and revived any element of national pride. Not to mention he managed to keep his country out of WW2. Towards the end, he got senile and sort kept Portugal from progressing and they are still somewhat behind because of it. Overall, he was a good leader, despite being a dictator. A lot like Tito in that aspect.

He was arguably a savoir to the nation he lead, but perhaps not to other countries. He did treat the subjects of Portugal's oversea colonies with the same dignity and respect that his own citizens received, so that's something.
No. Fuck him. Death to fascists.
