Are there any historical drama outside of the literary media that is actually strictly or almost strictly historically accurate, aside from dramatic liberties?
ie, all/almost all props, behaviors, technologies, politics and so on are in line with contemporary knowledge of the period.

Ad Astra (Second Punic War) is pretty good. The first chapter is a little much but over all it's pretty solid the jap did his homework.

Historie is nice, but it depends on what you mean, there are definitely historical inaccuracies, but they're all very clearly done intentionally, the research is definitely done.

Femanon, or just too straight?

Just picked up Total war Rome II, can I expect accuracy in its depiction of history/combat? I booted it up and did a custom Battle, found a formation called cannae, chucked.

But it's definitely not accurate. I mean, it's not the worst tv show considering american tv, but it's not as good as the other things posted in this thread.
On a personal note, I detest how they portray all the historical figures as scheming-machines, human beings, even the ones in power, are deeper than that, and they have their own motivations and justifications. The ones that think they are not righteous and well-intentioned to some extend are extremely rare.

Jap historical manga is all pretty good. Vinland Saga of course. Gunka no Baltzar's good though it's not QUITE historical since it's a fictional mid-1800s Europe with fictional countries so you get some ahistorical stuff but it's still a great war/political series.

Cesare is great too. The creator's a great artist, especially when it comes to backgrounds/cityscapes and the like and she works with a Dante/Renaissance scholar to make sure it's fairly accurate.
>>
>>1172664
vinland saga is a good drama, but the history is sorta history channel tier.
cesare is great, probably second favorite historical manga for me.

What do you guys think of Lindy?
I found him independently and it seems he's well known here
I enjoy his videos
>>

vinland saga was so boring on top of that, it suffered from all the issues of a manga and a saga, without the benefit of either
>>
>>1169296
Seconded.
>>
>>1173036
I too knew of him before I came here. Honestly he takes a very anthropological approach when it comes to weapons and armor: this is what is easiest for humans, so this is probably how they used it. Not the best especially when you consider how much training ancient armies had.
>>
>>1173036
Plays fast and loose with the facts and favors his own intuition over historical consensus. I think this makes him a lot more interesting but lots of people seem to sperg out on that.

I'll be interested to see how this hannibal comic turns out but I can't say it's really my thing.
>>
>>1171382

>Plays fast and loose with the facts and favors his own intuition over historical consensus.
bullshit, he proposes theories, he never says that he is only stating facts and consensus, and he's pretty good at making it clear when he's proposing something and when he's reiterating common belief, only an imbecile would be unable to tell the difference. it's not fast an loose, it's about being aware that it's a dialogue sometimes, not a lecture.
>>1173036
I like him a lot, but again, you have to understand that it's not some pop-lecture channel, it's as much discussion as it is education. sometimes he's a bit too much old-school nerd for me without filter and I cringe a bit, but that's charming too in a way.
>>1173143
anthropological perspective makes sense for humans. I don't really agree that he necessarily thinks that intuitive and easy is the right answer, but rather pragmatic. something can be complex and pragmatic and require lots of training, but something fundamentally inefficient doesn't become efficient through training. it's a reasonable mindset to explore ideas with on a hypothesis level. Of course when he states these things as facts he usually points to evidence.
>>
>>1173864
That's different, the wheels shown in the manga are like cart wheels, they would push an insignificant mass of water, the boat would never move.
>>
>>1173949
what? they're exactly the same, and would work.
there's spacing between the branches. it wouldn't be amazing but it would work.
>>
>>1173961
The branches are too thin, you'd need a larger surface area to move a signicant body of water. Also, the picture you posted might not be too accurate about the size of those wheels.
>>
>>1174023
those branches aren't that thin, they're roughly what eumenes can get his grip around, and about 6 of the branches will be in contact with the water at a time. try taking a branch with equivalent surface area and move it quickly through water, you'll definitely feel a reasonable amount of resistance, now imagine timing it with 6 with a consistent energy output. it'd work. I doubledog dare you.
Also it's a dumb thing to get so pissy about.
>>
>>1173907
That's entirely my point, maybe I was unclear. I know he's just musing but some people come at him because of his lack of rigor at times, which is missing the point.
>>
>>1174049
alright, fair enough, I guess I'm too used to that exact type of person.
>>
I, Claudius is pretty great
>>
>>1171644
Rome has the closest historical representation of Roman infantry tactics however.
>>
>>1174065
That is literature though.
On that note Masters of Rome is brilliant and brilliantly researches.
I dunno if guys will like it though, it's pretty soapy and the author definitely writes the romance in a way more geared towards women.
>>1174067
perhaps. I think I remember it being pretty good.
>>
>>1174067
Not exactly, their idea of legionaries holding onto each other was a nice touch but that really is just a theory.
>>
>>1173829
When I read that he apparently makes Hephaestion a split personality of Alexander's that killed whatever desire I had to ever want to pick that series up.

I just wish someone would fucking translate Napeoleon - Shishi no Jidai since it's obviously the most historically accurate piece of fiction in existence.

>This manga, called Napoleon Shishi no Jidai (lion’s age) is what you get when you mix 80s style violence, muscle, Fist of the North Star with the Napolenic wars.
>>
>>1174145
>he apparently makes Hephaestion a split personality of Alexander's that killed whatever desire I had to ever want to pick that series up.
it's brilliant though. also the hephaestion and alexander classic relationship is so fucking tired I kinda dreaded it before those chapters arrived and I was pleasantly surprised. and it's focusing on eumenes anyways, not alexander.
Stop disliking things I like.

No, his channel is fairly 'red-pilled' so to speak, in that he critiques modern progressive values. Then again, it's up to the illustrator, not Lloyd.

From what I remember there was almost no romance. I mean, 30 pages total of romance, if that, in a 600 page book doesn't exactly ruin my day. You've gotta be a real faggot if that bothers you (not saying it does bother you, I'm speaking generally).

A meme show for a meme audience. I urge everybody to watch The Caesars if they can. Really changed my view of the first emperors, Tiberius in particular. Six hour long episodes on Youtube:

huh? in masters of rome? it's almost all personal drama, there's at least 30 pages dedicated to one sheltered girl freaking out about having to marry an unattractive man, and 20 to someone starving to pressure her family into marrying her to sulla.
It doesn't bother me at all, I thought it might bother guys though.
>>
>>1180576
Drama and romance aren't the same thing, and events like those can give you a certain feeling for the characters (pity for the first poor girl, contempt for the second hysterical bitch). I liked it and I'm a guy. Even though they weren't my favorite parts, I didn't mind them at all.

On the topic of literal chinese comics, Ravages of Time is the best anything made about the Three Kingdoms

It's Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
The twist is that everyone is a genius. Characters that are generally portrayed as dumb are incredible minds and characters that are generally portrayed as smart are 1 in a billion talents

Of the "Big Three" historical autism channels (lindy, skallagrim, schola gladiatoria), I think I enjoy Lloyd's videos the most, find Matt's videos the most informative, and find Skallagrim's videos obnoxious AND uninformative.
