I'm an idiot. How did Roman tribes work? I feel like I can't get a simple explanation online and I need it for uni work.

It depends on tribe. For example the Iberians were developed , the austrians were always a pain in the ass.

I'm mostly talking about the whole voting system thingy.

Basically this, tribes were not comparable.

Oh! Sorry, I thought you meant conquered tribes. Really sorry...

Nah, it's okay. But does anybody know?

What do you want to know that the wikipedia article you linked isn't telling you?

Like I said I'm an idiot, but what exact purpose does a tribe serve? I realize it's a voting unit or something like that, but to understand some of the article I feel like I need context on the rest of the Republic as well.

Just an explanation like I'm 5, kinda.

It's a very archaic administrative division anon, nothing more. It was used to determine voting circumscriptions, military drafts, and stuff like that. By the time Rome entered the republican period, the tribes were basically irrelevant, only an administrative convenience for integrating new citizens into the system.

Adrian Goldsworthy describes the tribes political process in his biography of Julius Caesar.

Your head will spin.
