Does the fact we are using an alphabet invented by the Phoenicians count?
Accurate timekeeping and accurate navigation are two of the most important things ever. Up there with the alphabet and arguably harnessing electricity (which, while more recent, has and will play a role in literally everything in the foreseeable future).

Bell towers were around for a long time. People also tended to have public places they'd regularly hang out at so others could find them more easily.
