In Finnish mythology soul is divided into two beings. One is löyly or henki (pretty much breath of life) which was tied to physical body, and depending how well your body was taken care of, the stronger the löyly/henki was. Should the body perish, the löyly/henki would escape and the person would die. Then you would have you itseis-sielu "self-soul" which was closely tied to your personality and your family blood. It would define what kind of person you were, and once you would died natural death the self-soul would return back to the spirit world where it would eventually be reborn into future generations of your blood (with parts of your personality). So technically magical version of DNA.
If person would perish under violence (non-natural death) the self-soul wouldn't always return to the spirit world and would haunt until it had it's revenge.

To anyone whos read Plato's Phaedo: have any of you been able to find an argument against Socrates' that the soul must be immortal? So far Ive attacked two main points:

Aristotle had it right on the ball: the soul is that which makes you live, it is what actualizes your material body into action and reaction.
The soul is basically life. Your body can be ensouled or not, but only an ensouled body can act and create. The form of life my or may not exist on its own, but it is for sure present in every living being.
