What advice would you give someone who has hardly paid attention in history class and doesn't know anything about the country (Germany) he lives in?
Only thing I kind of know stuff about is spanish conquista + some italy related stuff from latin class.
I feel pathetic about it and really want to catch up but don't really know where to start/what's generally the best way to educate myself as in documentaries/books/internet etc. I realize with the many sources that exist these days it shouldn't be too hard, but I'd like to get some advice from people who know their stuff

Start with this documentary. Its pretty basic but alright. After this you will know what to educate in depth about.
Germans were dirty pagan barbarians, got Christianized, fell in love with Roman glory, fought over the right to call themselves Emperor of Rome, then eventually decided Rome was gay and they didn't even care about it, and became enamored with their own country and barbarous traditions and decided to kill everyone who wasn't German.
Wheres that one YouTube video that tells the whole, unbiased, story of the germans. You guys know the one...

Find some general books e.g. 'A History of the Modern World', I would get a few region-specific ones i.e. east-asia especially China + Japan, Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa, Mid-East etc. and find out what interests you, and then narrow it down from there. You might find that India is the most interesting shit ever, or Germania is boss-tier or whatever.
I did that and ended up with specific interests in Russia and Japan.
