Unity and conquest: Romans

Culture, learning, arts: Greeks

So basically if you're an enlightened individual, Greece is clearly superior.
>>
>>1056990
They had a complicated relationship. Romans thought themselves to be destined rulers, but couldn't help but admire Greece. There were some Romans, like Cato the elder, who thought the Greeks were too decadent and lazy and that Romans should be wary not to be too influenced by them. It was even considered unpatriotic to wear Greek clothing when entering the forum, despite being usually preferred over the uncomfortable toga.

Despite all that, the upper class Romans considered Greeks the only other worthy civilization and often studied in Greece as well speaking and writing in Greek.
>>

Greeks had the better society, they had a better culture. But Romans were better at governing, and much better militarily. Romans also had their arts, which were of course majorly influenced by greeks, as was their literature. If you're a massive faggot you call yourself an "enlightened individual".
>>
>>1056990
Greek culture was almost everywhere because

1. they write things down

2. they had colonies everywhere around the Mediterranean

And of course, when you write about your own history ... you might exaggerate. As ancient historians almost always do.
>>
Both good in their own right. Greek were better earlier in history, Romans trumped later on. Stop being such a Faggot about this stuff

Romans by any measure really.

That's one impressive victory. Granted the winning side always exaggerated the numbers.

> When you write about your own history ... you might exaggerate

If we're comparing Greek and Roman traditions in historiography, I really think that its unfair to criticise the Greeks for exaggerating thier own history.

I always found the Classical Greek historians to be much more objective than, say, Tacitus. Whilst Herodotus might lean slightly towards Greeks over non-Greeks and Thucydides might lean slightly to the side of Athens over the Peloponnesians, there's still none of the rabid patriotism that clouds Tacitus.

rome was a tiranic antintelectual monoculture, so it was clearly superior, as history prooved

Considering Rome did its damnedest to integrate itself into the Greek worldview, mythology, and history, it's clear the Greeks won the culture war.

>Romans considered Greeks the only other worthy civilization

Surely not, right? Carthage and Persia/Sassanian? empires all rivaled Rome in many fields at different points. Was there no respect?

What about Egypt or Babylonia? Granted these regions weren't in their prime anymore but the foundations and remains of those civilizations remained. The Romans had to have some respect for the motherfuckers Greek took inspiration from.
>>
>>1060831

You don't rase a city and sow it's fields with salt to show respect, anon.

Egypt was hellenistic by the time Romans conquered it.
