Why do some argue that the Middle Ages were better than the Renaissance?

Some people think contrary opinions make them seem smart and/or interesting.

medieval history is cool but I wouldn't say it was "better", at least not for the people alive at the time.

If the Middle Ages were bad that would mean that Christianity was actually bad for the West since it was the time that the church had its way in all aspects of life, while the Renaissance was a movement away from that and inspired by Pagan antiquity. Since it WAS bad and the Renaissance WAS better all that's left to do is historical revisionism.

>Hurr durr Dark Ages is an Enlightenment meme it was in fact Best Ages XD

Because the Renaissance stopped advancements in the physical sciences brought by late medieval scholars such as Thomas Bradwardine, Jean Buridan and Nicholas Oresme, who in the 14th century were already making inroads in the mathematization of physics that would later led to the scientific revolution in the 17th century. They stopped it because Renaissance scholars were mystical hacks who wanted to fap to the Greeks (see Paracelsus, Marsilio Ficino and Pico della Mirandola as examples).

Renaissance literature is also shit. People still talk about Arthurian romances, about chansons de geste, the Nibelungenlied etc. Who gives a fuck about Orlando Furioso? The only things the Renaissance was really better was painting and architecture.

Maybe there in your Germanic countries, here in Italy everyone knoes about the Orlando Furious, few people knew about the Nibelungenlied (how the fuck do you even pronounce that shit?).

>church had its way in all aspects of life

That's very ignorant. Actually, the "darkest" periods of the Middle Ages where the periods when the Church had less power, such as from the 5th to the 8th centuries, the 9th and 10th centuries, and during the Crisis of the 14th century.

The best periods, such as during the Carolingian Renaissance, the Renaissance of the 12th century and the actual Italian Renaissance where periods when the Church regained a lot of political and cultural power. The whole idea that "the church had it's way in all aspects of life" during the Middle Ages as a whole ignores the fuckton of political fights that existed between clergy and nobility, such as the Wars of Guelphs and Ghibellines.

You mean the LARPing Christcucks on /his/? Of course they're going to toss their sentiments and fake nostalgia at the only period where that worldview was relevant.
