Modern (mostly conceptual and abstract art I am talking about) art is definitely art. I think a lot of it is a hoax that serves to make normal people feel stupid and pretentious people feel intelligent. Cy Twombly is a total hack.
It's interesting that they did a study where people were asked to identify the abstract art done by the artist when choosing between art done by five year olds/apes and art done by professionals that fetched millions at auction. The result? 64% accuracy.

I've heard some cases from people who support modern art on here. They felt just as selective about the past as the cases that opponents of modern art bring up.
Overall I think it's pretty clear that there have always been two sides to this story.

No they weren't. We don't know how they were painted. Modern restorers find evidence of pigment and then use a lot of artistic licence to construct their restoration. Pigment only reveals the color of the base layer. We know from surviving paintings that Romans and Greeks were perfectly decent painters who would use multiple layers of paint, shadow, form, negative space, etc to paint realistically. There's no reason to think that they didn't apply this knowledge to painted sculptures.
