Photography killed of that sort of art.
No reasons to invest your life in crafting like like paintings when anyone who wants may just take a photography of said person in a few seconds.

>it's a 'I know nothing about the current art industry but I like to pretend I'm a patrician' thread

Good art is being made in full force. you faggots. Probably more so than has ever been the case in history, because everybody has access to the internet and can 'easily' self teach.
Art-ateliers are also all over the fucking place, especially if you live in the US.

It's just all about the entertainment industry these days. Everybody's a concept artist, or an illustrator, comic book artist. Shit like that.

Modern (mostly conceptual and abstract art I am talking about) art is definitely art. I think a lot of it is a hoax that serves to make normal people feel stupid and pretentious people feel intelligent. Cy Twombly is a total hack.

It's interesting that they did a study where people were asked to identify the abstract art done by the artist when choosing between art done by five year olds/apes and art done by professionals that fetched millions at auction. The result? 64% accuracy.

Still art though.
>>
>>1049047
Why? Because you're so knowledgeable about modern art? I studied history of art at university and now I'm learning to draw and paint and I think a lot of contemporary and modern art movements are complete bullshit.
>>
>>1049572
The artist's job isn't just to be a photocopier. The painter uses composition, line, form, negative space, shadow, light and other tools to create an image that makes you feel or think.

Check out the sculptor August Rodin.

>degenerate art is degenerate because the community isn't skilled enough to produce or appreciate classical art
Doesn't that argument fall away when you realize most of the great decadent artists actually possessed classical skills in their sketches?
>>
>>1048101
The problem is you think these museums that feature retarded abstract / installation type of pieces are an authority on art. That's not "art now" if you asked some tens of millions of people who don't even pay attention to that crap, but are instead fully absorbed in all the comics, movies, shows, games, sculptures, illustrations, digital paintings, etc. coming out today.
>>
Have you ever noticed how the people who complain about modern art never know anything about pre-modern art?
>>
>tfw you discover all those Greek and Roman 'white' statues were actually horribly painted
>>
>>1050184
How do you know that what you know is all fact?

I've heard some cases from people who support modern art on here. They felt just as selective about the past as the cases that opponents of modern art bring up.

Overall I think it's pretty clear that there have always been two sides to this story.
>>
>>1050229
No they weren't. We don't know how they were painted. Modern restorers find evidence of pigment and then use a lot of artistic licence to construct their restoration. Pigment only reveals the color of the base layer. We know from surviving paintings that Romans and Greeks were perfectly decent painters who would use multiple layers of paint, shadow, form, negative space, etc to paint realistically. There's no reason to think that they didn't apply this knowledge to painted sculptures.

Ok look here you fucking plebs, this is my latest work. If you have the AUDACITY to sit there and tell me that this ISN'T art then you can go FUCK YOURSELF, you uncultured cretin.
