As the Western Roman Empire collapsed, Venetians were the last vestige of civilization in the region. Any eurocucks with a 3 digit IQ who weren't lucky enough to be born to some warlord or willing to wear the chastity cage and join the church would gravitate to their trade network, of which Venice became the core (along with Genoa, their mirror image on the other side of the Apennine Peninsula) after the Eastern Roman Empire declined.
While other states were still a feudal theocratic mess, Venice was spook free until the renaissance spread all over Europe and the übermensch went elsewhere. As such, instead of fighting pointless religious wars or dying in someone else's succession crisis, the Venetians would fight to expand trade or sack Constantinople.
