>The society that puts equality before freedom will end up with neither. The society that puts freedom before equality will end up with a great measure of both

Was he right /his/?
>>
>>1005327
No, because he's speaking in extreme terms. Anarchocapitalism results in neither freedom nor equality, despite supposedly valuing freedom.
>>
>>1005327
Yes

Just look at the "left" in Western nations. Slowly stripping away everyone's rights in the name of equality. Can't hurt someone's feelings on the internet in some nations. The police will show up and put you in prison.
>>
>>1005327
Nice photocaption.
>>
>>1005334
Friedman was a monetarist, though.
>>
>>1005350
Sure, but if you put freedom over equality in every situation, you end up with anarchy. Which inevitably involves neither freedom nor equality.
>>
>>1005357
>if you put freedom over equality in every situation, you end up with anarchy.

That's a big assumption.

No anarcho-capitalist worth their salt would say that that's true.
>>
>>1005384
ooohh nice pepe
>>
>"but it will be a nice prison!"
>>
>>1005384
Well ancaps are complete retards, so I don't really care what they think.
>>1005372
Not really. Name one law that makes everyone more free.
>>
>>1005393
Thanks fampai, I'm not even an ancap. I've just had to argue with a lot of them before. Cool guys, too idealistic though.

>>1005397
They're not complete retards, they just don't see the irony in indoctrinating everyone to anarcho-capitalism without some kind of regulating force. It all hinges on people acting in their best interests in a roundabout way (via anarchy) while trying to convince them that the way we've done everything the past 5,000 years or more (government/force) is less appealing to people who are usually seeking control over others (which is largely everyone). People would rather play the game of government than test the waters in some hypothetical where they'd only control their own life and have no "rule-bending" impact on others.

And laws guaranteeing free speech and freedom of the press are good places to start for good laws.
>>
>>1005397
>Not really. Name one law that makes everyone more free.

The Bill of Rights, for starters.
>>
>>1005357
>>1005334
>Anarchocapitalism results in neither freedom nor equality
>if you put freedom over equality in every situation, you end up with anarchy
pick one
>>
>>1005418
Except that it limits states freedom to make laws contrary to the ones of the federal government, and it limits the freedom of government agents by keeping them from busting int your house, and limits the freedom of the troops by preventing them from forcing you to quarter them, etcetera. There are few instances where the law increases everyone's freedom.

>>1005413
>laws guaranteeing freedom of speech and of the press

But now I'm no longer free to join my neighbors in lynching bob for calling black people inferior. And I'm not free to blow up CNN. The problem is that freedom is an abstraction.
>>
>>1005468
>The problem is that freedom is an abstraction.

All human social structures are built on abstractions.

If you can't understand them, you can't function fully as a human being.
>>
>>1005475
Well sure, but freedom specifically is too abstract to make absolute statements about it. It is not inherently good to increase freedom, because some freedoms, like the freedom to kill each other, are not worth having. And what all social structures are arguably founded on is sacrificing absolute freedom in exchange for the protections offered by a state, per Hobbes.
>>
>>1005327
No. With the ideas of perfectible rational supermen exiled to the fringe of society, liberation and equality work to each others' detriment.
>>
>>1005418

The Bill of Rights isn't a law or set of laws. It's a constitutional provision outlining a set of powers that legislative bodies have and don't have.

To illustrate with an example: SCOTUS dicta in cases like Heller indicate that the conception of what counts as "arms" for purpose of the second amendment are handheld things, because of the phrase "keep and bear" arms. You have constitutional protection against Congress restricting your rights to own handguns. You do not have those same constitutional protections if Congress decided to ban private ownership of howitzers.

That doesn't mean howitzers are necessarily illegal to own; and while regulated, I'm aware of some people and private organizations owning artillery pieces. But it does mean that Congress has the authority to take them away should they pass legislation at such.
>>
>>1005334
Friedman wasn't an anarchocapitalist though, he was against big bloated government.
>>
>>1005334 "Unfortunately, unanimity is not always feasible. There are some respects in which conformity appears unavoidable, so I do not see how one can avoid the use of the political mechanism altogether."

lads we need the rule of law because shitty people want to do shitty things
we have the law as a way of making reason govern instead of just going after whatever you want and never questioning it
libertarians are literally barbarians
>>
>>1005977

Get a load of this retard.

SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.
>>
>>1007064
I bet you think we need the Ten Commandments in order to be moral, too.
>>
>>1007738
no I don't lol
that added absolutely nothing to the discussion you faggot
>>
>>1005357
Which isn't what he actually said, but its easier to knock down strawmen, isnt it
>>
>>1005513
Killing someone is infringing on their freedom. Also just because some freedoms are given up for a state, it does not mean all freedoms should. A healthy balance should be the goal.

Sounds like the opinion of somebody who's never had to worry about equality.
>>
You can't believe in small government dude, I mean come on look at Somalia!!!!
>>
>>1008284
>Sounds like the opinion of somebody who's never had to worry about equality.

kek, this is retarded.

There are several rich people in the United States alone that are so leftist that they even advocate being taxed more, like Mark Cuban and Warren Buffet.

There exists leftist rich people, and libertarian poor people m8, deal with it.
>>
>>1005327
I believe the first 100 years of US history directly prove him wrong. What a dumb faggot.

Freedom without socialism is privilege and injustice; socialism without freedom is slavery and brutality
>>
>>1008308
No they don't
>>
>>1008328
But how can socialism co-exist with individual freedom?

Give real world examples of where that has been the case, and if you say the Scandinavian countries you need to get the fuck out.
>>
>>1005327
/pol/ is that way if you want to circle jerk about your right-wing loonies

>>
>>1008394

I agree they are, but saying shit like this>>1008328

Without really defining what "socialism" means, is retarded.
