If you are talking about the 1970's, think of the costs of all of the wars, also international disapproval, only the Rhodesians liked your colonies as Portuguese Mozambique kept their borders safe, they even started the Mozambique bush war to prevent left wing/black guerrilas from setting up camps across the border with the support from the government after independence
They became an empire.

It's didn't help that they alienated their Mesticos and Assimildaos with Salazars policies. The former lost all the prestige and power because no need to a Lusofied mixed ruling class to help run shit bureaucratically and other shit when we can import Portuguese as much as we want since Portugal is filled with people who have no qualms and will jump at the opportunity to emigrate anywhere and the latter your position was barely any better then a non "assimilated" native.

I remember reading that some Portuguese have returned for business since Portugal isn't doing too well. It's quite sad the idea of a multiethnic "empire" couldn't work due to blatant rascism from the centre country.

But Cabo Verde was ignored for most of it's history when Portugal held on to it and even they who got the least amount of ass fuckery wanted to be independent.

The populations were never consulted, plus the movement (paigc) who demanded it's independence was for the union of cabo verde and guinea bissau.
