He went from being a generous, loving compassionate king into a tyrannical asshole who would execute almost on whims, even people who were very close, loyal and even beloved by him. He might promise to pardon people, then execute them anyway. There were numerous instances where the people he had executed were condemned on "evidence" which was clearly fabricated, or instances where he could have pardoned and exiled them for their crimes, supposed or otherwise, but he chose execution instead.
And that's to say nothing of the ill will held against him for the destruction of the churches, not just the institution of Catholicism but the literal theft and destruction of priceless artwork and antiques.
