Took lessons for two and a half years. I'm completely and utterly inept at learning another language. The most I took away from it were a few words here and there. I can't even speak or understand a complete sentence in Japanese, let alone read it at all.

Saying "learn it" is easy. It's a monumental task to actually do it, and some, like me, simply aren't capable.
