There are so many factors that dissuade financial investment into this market.
Linking your identity is seen as a generally uncomfortable move for most potentials, avoid via piracy.
Physical copies are a complication. Logistics (shipping + import), legality (content) and privacy (customer info linked to site + actually owning the book).
Digital copies are *slightly* less inconvenient in this regard but still link identity and financial info.
Plus, it's really fast and painless to retrieve a gallery or torrent for something you want, almost always DRM free.
There are so many pros and cons to both, but piracy suffers from a tiny fraction of cons.
It's a shame that authors don't look past the legality, it's pretty narrow sighted of them.

Patreon can be a good thing if done right. People who want to support can give in their money and receive some goodies on the side, while the rest can just freeload and get the bulk of the content for free.
There's some guy who's been making some very extreme 3/d/ animations, and his Patreon page is clocking at around 8k a month. His work is released for free, but patrons get full resolution video (as opposed to just 720p), more previews, and they can help decide the content of his future work.

Same reason adblock users are useful on websites, they're fans. Fans circulate content, they're advertisements in their own right. Sure, sharing for free is less than ideal, but getting your name out there, across the world even is a massive benefit.
Of course, legitimate consumers can do all this and more, but as multiple anons have confirmed before me, this guy was off our radars before this thread which discusses piracy. On /h/, which is fuelled by sharing.
In the adblock analogy, sharing content can lead to ad revenue through referred users. In the same way, shared content can actually lead to sales.
It's an unlikely outcome given the nature of piracy, and if you read back you'll find why piracy is just so much more convenient, but it is absolutely a waste of time and effort for an author to actively feel remorse against piracy when there's nothing to be done about it.
It has been proven time and again, using Kasumi Rebirth as an example duebto its so called popularity, that DRM does not result in sales. It harms your legitimate consumers and eliminates pirates. But those pirates were never planning on buying the game in the first place, and don't have a sudden change of heart bring denied the content.
To say that pirates are awful is a mentality that revolves around the fallacy that pirates harm the industry. Unless they're going around preventing legitimate sales this is simply a flawed perspective.
