Is there any quick way to turn the white and its gradient reds to gray in pic related?

I guess this was a troll because it just turned the whole thing grey instead of making that white a grey colour.
Issue is that it's clearly a large image that was shrunk down but I don't have access to the large image version where, I imagine, it would be far easier to do these colour tweaks.
Is there no way to make any coloured pixel with more than a certain rgb value deduct a certain amount of colour to darken it into a grey?

Yeah.
I thought I'd be able to use the fill tool and blur tool but it didn't look good at all. I'm using GIMP btw and I have almost 0 experience beyond making shitty 32x32 pixel sprites for BYOND.

Pretty ugly method but I think you can make it work. I'm self taught in gimp so there's probably a better way. German but same layout.
