When I expand the paths, it stays that way.

That depends on how experienced you are.

You'll have to trace the pictures into various layers (the cap, the hair, mouth etc), then colourize using gradient and different opacity modes.

Its not so hard, but it'll take some time

Hi good people of /gd/. I would like to ask:

For economic reasons, I was forced to be in a family plan and was gifted a sony experia z3+ (z4 for JP users). I was seeing some themes and would like to know...In the sony page, they have a theme creator and I've been seeing around but can't find what I would like to know which is if there is a way to change certain icons to stuff that you would normally download from the internet like this. Is this possible? I just want to change the home, apps and phone button

Aright I'll post it here;

I'm a 2nd year communications student and while I'm trying to steer into /gd/ through internship and relevant minors, I still have a zero noteworthy portfolio.
How do I build it up? Do fictional (re)designs or go out and do some local work?

Change your line style, the corners are creating this issue.

For this particular artistic style I found it easiest to build the grid in Photoshop using shift+click with the brush tool, export the finished grid and then build my gradient shapes in Illustrator. The align tool is your friend for matching up all of the points.

A nice excercise is to open a movie, click on some random place in the timeline and try to sketch it the best you can in 1 minute, then jump to another random still frame from the movie and repeat.
When you grab a second movie, shorten the sketch time to 45 seconds, then 30 seconds.
First ones will be terrible but after a while you will start recognizing the important lines, the ones that tell the whole thing, it surely helped me to improve my sketches.

A stupid question thread? Nice.

I've always wondered, should I give rastered images more faith? I ask cause I kind of like illustrating, but I find it mind numbingly annoying to trace the drawing in illustrator to make it vector. It doesn't even end up looking the same. I feel like it loses the character built from the media used to produce it. It feels digital and in some ways I don't like that.

So, for something like an illustration, is a raster okay or is it frowned upon? When would it be acceptable?

some kind of artwork can only be rasterized (ps and such).
unless you are planing on plotting a building or something, 4k resolution should be more than enough (at 300dpi if you are planning on printing it).

In Illustrator everything is smooth.
I've exported it as PNG.
Picture related is maximum zoom in.
I thought that PNGs don't do this.
What have done wrong?
>>
>>256454

PNG is another raster format. Its claim to fame is the transparent background, far superior to GIF.

You may be thinking of an SVG file, a vector format, which can be infinitely enlarged with no loss of quality.
>>
>>256458
Thank you for the quick reply.
>>

All pngs do that to some degree when scaled or zoomed in on. Can't really avoid it, though you make it less pronounced by increasing image resolution, if you want to keep it a png, of course.

>>256582
When a pattern keeps repeating, every corner of your picture neighbors the other 3. So in order to "patternise" a picture, you have to
>split it into 4 pieces
>flip pieces around so that 1234 becomes 4312
>merge 4 pieces
>clone stamp so the shit looks pristine

Since your pic has an overlaid gradient, it's not that good for a pattern. So crop either the right or left side and follow aforementioned steps.

by "making a pattern" i meant making a square project and defining a pattern, you know, not just stamping it
what does "merge 4 pieces" mean tho ? i'm kinda stuck on this one

thanks for your wonderful advice though
>>
>>256595
You can download >>256582 and copy and paste it end to end. "merge 4 pieces" means that after you switched them around, you just merge the 4 layers back into one layer so that you can begin clone stamping whatever abomination turned out in the middle section because of the flipping.

I'm doing a project for my graphic design class, where we have to create a poster for a hypothetical event ( this event is a real thing I think, but still). We had to create a hybrid image to use in the poster.

Right now I'm trying to lay out some of the text, and I'm having trouble getting the date of the event to look good in a way with the main title block. I'm going to move the whole thing down a bit as well (maybe).
As far as the content of the image itself, feel free to critique that as well. For the most part it's kind of modular, but any big changes to the subject will take quite a bit of time to actually render (so I'd like to avoid that).
Backgrounds and the like are fair game though.
To be honest, I still think it looks kind of pedestrian. I don't really know what to do to really make it look great. I'm planning on adding some textured overlay to the text, and maybe image, but I don't know if that's enough.
I feel like I might be polishing a turd, but it's too late to go back now.

If you have any suggestions I'd be glad to hear. I'm not asking for you to do my project for me, just some tips on how to get the date looking good mainly.

For fun I tried to make it look like how the western flyers are like (>>256961 ). I thought the teacher would be kind of against it, but he really liked it.

>Would I need vector overlays, or can I use regular images?
it depends on what you can get. for a higher quality you should aim vector but those usually aren't free (and your design is already too crisp/sharp) maybe try searching for paper, grunge, and water damage/stain textures on google. usually you want to do the overlay effects on photoshop so you can modify them (curves, levels, masking, etc) i find awful to do all that on illustrator.

Hey everyone!
So I have been wanting to pursue CG for sometime now and I'm really interested in making models. I have downloaded auto desk 3ds max and I haven't gotten to the sticky yet. But my main question is what is the technique/cinematography that is used in movies and video games where the camera goes through the 3D model and sweeps around it? Such as the Deadpool movie intro And the Marvel vs Capcom 3 intro. Also pic related.
>>
>>257482
It's called a dolly shot because in traditional cinematography this thing is accomplished by moving the camera through the scene, usually on a track setup.

it depends of the software you have for making fonts try FontForge (open source) Birdfont (free) or Glyphs, RoboFont.

I've been trying to give a gif a background image.

Initially, I just imported the gif into GIMP as a layer on top of the background, moved the frames to the right position and saved it as a gif file. I was under the impression this would simply keep the background behind the frames as the gif moved, but it ended up just being a still image in a gif file.

What should I do instead?

Pic related is the background.

So for the most part, I'm finished with the poster for my GD class.
I've been putting it off, but the professor isn't too crazy about the background to the image, and neither am I to be honest.

Only problem is that I'm having trouble finding images large enough to be used, or at least at 300 dpi.
Because of the way I had to render out the cowboy, the entire image is 7200x5400 px, which should end up to 300dpi when I go to print (at least I think).
Any ideas on where to find applicable images to use?

Ideally I'm going to go print it tomorrow.
It's going to be printed at 24"x18" and mounted on foamcore.
I'm going to office depot, not really sure how well they print. I'm not sure if they accept print marks or how I should go about doing it, but I guess I'll figure it out.

Aright so I'm trying to remake this messy/grainy gradient I saw in some artwork by memory.
Problem is I don't wanna leave Illustrator because glorious vector graphics, but the most satisfactory result I got was from Photoshop's Gradient Tool with a Dissolve blending mode.
Plus when I remake this shit in Illustrator the Grain texture doesn't scale accordingly.

Does anyone have any more examples of this kind of grainy gradient style or tips on how to remake it in Illustrator?

im saying dont put any extra sound effects or music in using after effects especially mp3 but keep the audio that is with the footage

Another stupid question, I'm playing with after effects and premiere, I've exported a file from after effects as h.264 rgb and a separate h.264 alpha video, how do I combine them in premiere so that the alpha acts as an alpha and anything that's black on the alpha video makes that part of the rgb video transparent?
>>
>>257966
are you on a mac? usually i combine files in after effects, but try:

- render as video for windows
- No compression
- RGB+Alpha

another option:

add your comp to the render queue (be sure to have no background layer) and use QuickTime as the output format. Select a codec like Animation or PNG and be sure to change the depth to RGB + Alpha. This option is not available for all codecs.
>>
>>257982
Okay, I've got it to work by exporting it as an avi with rgb + alpha, but the file size is 1gb for a 6 second clip, I know this is because of compression differences in the codecs, but to save space (a lot of it), how do I combine the two separate video files of the h.264 in premiere?

Export it as a single h264 with RGB+Alpha.
It won't let you do so directly.
Choose to export it as Quicktime with RGB+Alpha and then change the codec (not the preset) to h264.
You will have one small video with a separate Alpha Channel.

So setting keyframes at one point and another will animate it from 0% opacity at say frame 0 to 100% at frame 50 smoothly

But what if I want to toggle something on in one frame? There's

opacity 0 - frame 49
opacity 100 - frame 50

So I'm doing an animation in Illustrator for my college class (yes, it has to be Illustrator) but the problem is phantom frames. The animation was originally 400 frames but I cut it down to 200 to save time. Finished the animation and exported as a .swf by converting layers to frames, but after frame 200 it keeps playing frame 200 for 200 more frames as if frames 201-400 were still they. well. they aren't. So I need help finding out how to get rid of these phantom frames.

The gif is the animation and frame 200 is when it fades to red, so basically it stays red for 200 extra frames and it should only be red for 1 frame.

Each layer has only 1 sub layer (checked em' all myself)

I've been doing freelance design on the side for about four years now and I've finally developed a hefty portfolio and enough confidence to fully commit myself to this trade, however I've been applying for several in-house jobs for the past few months and haven't turned up with anything but one interview. I'm assuming that it is because I don't have a graphic design degree, since the last interview I went to seemed to really like me until they asked about my certification and education background (I pursued a finance degree before I dropped out). Can I really not get an in-house job if I don't have a degree? If that's not the case what should I be doing to ensure or at least increase the chances of landing a job?

I need help.

I am currently attending community college on a grant that allows me to go tuition free. I have the chance to take a 'communication design' major, and seek out an associates degree through a what is basically a graphic design program that is designed for people looking to get the credentials and experience to get a job right after they finish in two years.

The other option is to continue doing my (absolutely bullshit) general education courses, and transfer to a 4 year university where I would be taking a 2 year graphic design program, but have to pay for it.

I honestly don't know what to do. I would imagine the universities program would be better, right? But isn't graphic design mostly self taught anyway? Would I learn more if I did the community college program and just teach myself on the side? Would being able to get a job sooner and put me in a situation with real world experience help me learn and grow more than a university program would?

Is there even any credibility difference between a community college program versus a high end university program?

You lose a job to someone significantly less skilled at design than you, just because they're a girl.

You now don't have money, because the girl has had everything handed to her, because she's a girl.

It's a skewed system. It skews different ways in different instances, but it happens. I imagine in more professional settings it doesn't happen as much, but in anything socially oriented or otherwise, it does.

Im trying to make a lightning effect in a PNG with transparency. Problem is all lightning generation tutorials I find are for creating lighning effect against black backdrop - here's a blue tint effect that does not work if overlayed over non-black background. I know that black BG can be removed IN photoshop with Screen type blending, but that only works against an image, not a transparent layer.

Im also aware that GZDoom has an additive overlay mode that does the same thing, but I want to further work with this texture outside of Doom and Photoshop, and I need proper transparency with it's Lighting effect. Most advices Ive heard have to do with cropping out image as is with /some/ transparency info, but that transparency is being backdropped, again, against black, and it becomes apparent if it is viewed against lighter colors - like red on the right of the image, while I want it to drop into proper, non-blackened transparency.

What type of red would you describe this as, in terms of shade? Because there's a lot of shades of red with specific names.

How to get into pretty cartography (not functional like the road maps you find)? First draw up map by hand & then digitalize?

Or use vectors?

I don't really give a shit about color names

pic related is made with

I also did the search on the pantone's website for you

I think the closest ones are "rose red" and "virtual pink"

Is there a way to randomly distribute a bunch of objects in Illustrator? I'm making a space-themed poster and want to place the stars randomly instead of by hand.

Before you ask, I tried doing it by hand but I'm never satisfied with the results. It never seems random enough.
>>

That font doesn't work at small sizes. Your letter spacing is also way too far.
>>
In illustrator no but if in photoshop make a new layer and fill with black convert to smart object then go to noise and monochromatic and also add a gassian blur.

When designing some decade themed invitation, they always have a retrospective feel to them.
They don't really look like an invitation that was made by someone living in that decade but more like a horrible heap of clichés and stereotypes.

Do any of you know if there's a kind of gallery or database of the development and style of invitations or birthdaycards or anything similar over the decades?

Or should i just look at the style of old newspapers and advertisments?

im trying to put some stuff together but i cant name the art styles to look up examples

one is the 1950s art style that usually had thin lines connecting shapes with solid colors. Often seen in the background of tv sets or when text was displayed on tvs, in those info demonstrations of new kitchen technology or what it would be like in the future, and much of it was shown in Ren n Stimpy...
pic kinda related.

next is this kinda "world explorer" theme. I know theres a name for it.. Usually its a very warm motif; imagery of a room with lots of dark wood furniture and bookshelves, globes, sextons, telescopes, maps, pith helmets, african safari equipment sitting next a statue from india and mask from japan.. just shit from all over. The at-home library of an archaeologist or big game hunter..

i haven't seen any good ones but there's some books that have thousands of logos for example Rockport - Logo Lounge, i think it has more than 9 books each book containing over 2,000 logos
>LogoLounge has become an indispensable tool for logo research, discussion, inspiration, reference
others:
Yasaburo Kuwayama - Trade Marks & Symbols Vols.I & II
Rockport - Letterhead Logo Design Vols 1-?
Sumio Hasegawa & Shigeji Kobayashi - A Collection of Trademarks & Logotypes in Japan

saul bass/american modernism isnt exactly the right thing. Sucks cuz since i dont know the term, its hard to find examples..
Heres something of it in a sense.. pic is from ren n stimpy.. ignore the product.. Its that styling of the lines and those star things.. This style.

as for the frank lloyd wright, not it. Im talkin something earlier in origin.. The motif is from the 1910s/20s-ish..

I'm having trouble making my Illustrator file the correct size when I export to PNG for Photoshop. I made the AI file 1080x1920 pts when I created it and the artboard tool backs this up, but when I export there is an additional pixel width of transparency on the left side and bottom. Photoshop insists the file is 1081x1921 px.

How can I fix this and make it the right size?

Have a 13" Macbook Pro Retina, have never really drawn or been the creative type however I kind of wanted to try design my own personal twist on the icons I have in my dock to give my Macbook a more personal feel.

I was wondering if anyone could suggest some good quality yet not too expensive drawing devices. Would use it for the occasional draw when I'm feeling creative but would also come in handy when I'm trying to help people out with Math/anything over Skype (screen sharing) so my handwriting isn't so fucked because I'm trying to write out equations, etc. using a trackpad/shitty mouse. Would also come in handy for transferring notes I've made in class into nicer looking PDF's or just any sort electronic notes I can keep on my computer.

I know some people use bamboo sort of track pad looking things for this but I really have no experience in the area and don't want to rip myself off by buying the wrong thing(s).

Any help would be lovely, ty in advance.

Kind of long, sorry.

Hi guys,

I have a problem. I am new to graphic design, and generally any kind of image editing, so I might not know specific terms. I have a couple of images I was working on in paint.net, and I moved parts(selections) of the image, which would in turn move the selection, but also leave a checkered space where the image used to be. I was fine with this, and I thought it looked pretty cool in context with my image. When I exported the image from paint.net, I was able to view it in my windows photo viewer, but the checkered spaces where black. I was fine with that too, until I opened it up in a different photo viewer. Instead of being black, the spaces were now white. I had designed the image with the thought in mind that the spaces would be black. Now they were white, and the image looked like crap. So my question for you guys is:

Is there a way that I can convert these checkered/black/white spaces into universally black?

I tried to be as concise and clear as possible.
Please help.

BTW, pic related is/should be predominately black. I do have some white spaces in the pic, but that was intentional, and not a result of any selection moving.

In firefox, on 4tune, the mentioned checkered spaces are transparent.

I don't know what you mean by pen-mouse but the wacom intuos series are reliable and cheap.
Mine has yet to dissapoint me and it's been several years since we are together.

Edit > Trim, select "transparent pixels" and that's it.
>>
>>261399
I never used paint.net but it looks pretty similar to photoshop.
The checkered spaces mean that that section is transparent. If you want to preserve that transparency, export the image as a .png. If you want the transparent sections to be black, create a new layer, fill it with black using the bucket tool or whatever tool you want, and then move that new layer to the bottom of the layers panel.
