I'm putting together a chest cavity for an animation. The character is half human half robot hence the metal bits. This my first real project in illustrator, any tips for making the parts feel more consistent?

The gradient backing looks average but i'm not sure how to keep it looking 3 dimensional otherwise.

Put some work into the strands comming from the heart, the top right one comming from the side looks off in its connection to the 'lung'
