>"What do you mean my battery is dead on my laptop? I turned it off! Why does the battery die if it's not charged?"
i can understand if someone mistakes "dead" for "doesn't work anymore", especially since the term is used for batteries that are actually dead, too

>"What? I have to buy a separate thingy to have wifi? What the hell is this then?"
>"Thats a moden ma'am"
this is fair, too, modems/modem+routers/modem+router+APs and router+AP's all looks pretty much the same most of the time, there's even ones with internal antennas, so don't say "but mah pointy antennas"

>"I don't know how to use an android! It's too complicated to use! I'll stick to my iPhone and when I mess it up I'll take it to the apple store to get them to fix it or show me how to do something! apple should change their slogan to "ignorance is bliss" already

I had a friend who returned his Samsung and got an iPhone 6 after I convinced him to give android a chance when upgrading from his iPhone 5.

His problem? He couldn't figure out how to do attachments to text messages and then bitched that it was too complicated when I showed him.

really, even on the ps1 it's shit
only things like vhs/laserdisc and older don't benefit from better connectors
any video game console nes and up benefit greatly from signal types better than composite

pic related, nes is probably the least affected, with simpler graphics/few colors and low resolution compared to newer consoles, there's still benefits

>>
>>53999441
If you've ever played a NES with composite you would almost immediately notice the horrible composite dot crawl, washed colors and color bleeding. The NES has one of the worst composite encoders ever made. There's a reason people drop hundreds of dollars to cram an HDMI connector in a 30 year old console.

that's true, but with the low resolution and low-detail sprites, it doesn't really make anything too hard to see
like, you can still see each pixel in the above image

in newer consoles, with higher resolutions and more detailed graphics, composite outright ruins the picture, making many things impossible to see as intended

almost anytime someone mentions Linux/unix AT ALL FUCKING ALL Gentoo has to be brought up. Reality is, that no one in their right mind uses it and sticks to the easier more known types.

When the power company is getting theirs out, they cut my line with the chainsaw
Call my ISP, explain the issue, they escalate it to dispatch
Because it was escalated their "senior" tech team gave me a call
It's some random Indian call center
I explain the problem, cable is cut in half, yada yadda.
He wants light readings on the modem
I explain the internet connectivity lights are off, tell him I am running a continous ping to Google dns from my router
He wants me to give him exact light readings
I give them to him
He says it's my modem causing the issue
I reexplain my fucking line is cut in half, and he disconnects.

I used the composite cable for about a year with my ps3 before I discovered that it had HDMI. I honestly didn't understand why blu ray was a thing. I've been working in a very well established tech support company repairing machines for about 8 months after I got laid off from my old job. DO NOT fix other people's computers, phones, etc.

MAYBE fix your GF's computer/phone and if she bitches, DUMP HER

Life's too cunting short to put up with all the crap.

If you REALLY want to fix computers, etc. for money then only do so by being outsourced by another IT company/department so they can take all the shit.

>"If you're experiencing security issues you need to adjust your router firewall settings."
>"NO! It's all cause of that new modem you installed"

This is where this guy started to smash the buttons on his phone with his finger. He claimed it was a virus that our new modem allowed on his home network. I could hear his fingers touching the keypad,,,

Actually you can. But it's a matter of degrees- eating apples don't make good cider, but more sour apples do.
Not that eating apples make bad cider, just it's not as good.
Cider is best if it's a year old, so you should drink last year's batch.

I installed elementary OS on mom's laptop. All she does is browse the internet and maybe watch videos on youtube once in a while

While the distro is perfect for the purpose, i often wonder if she actually needs a 4000 series i5 for just browsing the internet? Might as well exchange the laptop with my brother who's surviving on an Atom netbook in college.
Most people i encounter in day to day life use vastly overpowered machines to browse the internet only

Oh right, you don't like anything from windows because its "proprietary software" you don't like it if you can't fuck it up and complain on /g/ later how you don't know how to fix it.

I've got one that happened this year
>Mum's friend's laptop won't install Windows updates because there's no space.
>It was a display model she got for cheap.
>I'm studying CS and CE double
>"I'll fix it for you. Sounds like a lack of disk space"

>MFW the drive was still factory partitioned with C: as 20GB
>MFW rest of disk space was free
>MFW 'programmer' brother in law didn't understand this.
Chuckled while Windows was decompressing the file archives.

>"I can do it"
>A day later she will call "OK I'm ready"
>You do it and fix her HDD back to normie
>she checks it out"Wow anon! there's so much space and.. . . WHERE DID YOU PUT ALL MY FILES AND STUFF? WHY DID YOU DELETE THEM?"
>"I... I told you. Did you back them up?"
>"They were backed up on my computer!"
>"No, I was saying to back them up on a thumb drive. No I can't recover them"
>"Why did I trust you!"

Well 2bh you recommended mint like its actually a good distro.
>>
>>54017563
When did it go bad?
I hear people on /g/ and other forums talk nothing but good about it all the time. I'm not saying it's a god send but it is good. But then again, you can't please everyone.
>>
I bought nexus 6p without checking its specs. I ended up using my 128gb sd card as a otg usb card reader.
>>
>>54017538
Here's a lesson of data recovery: When you ask them if there's any data they want recovered, they will say no but they mean yes.
Back it up for them on your own storage devices. When they complain about the data being missing, say you can recover the data, and charge them a data recovery fee while you're just copying from your own backups.
They'll thank you and give you money for it.
>>
>>54017563
No distro is reasonably functional. It's literally a /g/ badge of respect if you can fuss with Linux enough to make it partially usable.
>>
>>54017583
Actually, that's not a bad idea.
I'll keep that in my jew pocket anon

>>54017596
This. People get so mad when you tell them an OS is bad or not as good as it should be. Just realize it is prolly crap or has some bugs and no real consumer wants to sit at their desk the entire time trying to make it work when you have windows and Mac functionally ready. (this isn't to say windows or mac are god sends either. Just saying in general)
>>
>>54017577
It was pretty bad from the start, people just recently started realising that.

It's Ubuntu with less features and security. It even has worse performance.

I have nothing against it personally but I can't recommend it when Ubuntu is better in every way. If the bloat is an issue, there's lubuntu or Ubuntu mate.
>>
I have so many of these

>we gotta contain costs anon

>same customer
>calls me after his flight lands to ask me to fix the go-go in flight wi-fi

>almost every customer at one point in time
>emails in a ticket at 4:59 and then goes home
>>
>>54017620
People always side against Ubuntu and say go get mint cause of minimalism. Which is the entire reason why I have mint on a netbook. It works for the most part for it but I wouldn't recommend a netbook to any one.

>>
>>54017632
That's odd. I'm using Ubuntu mint and it's more responsive on my atom d2500 than mint mate was.

Mint gets shilled as a distro that just werks, but that's most modern distros. Only issue I've had with Fedora is non free drivers.

Mint is based on older Ubuntu LTS releases so you can't expect it to offer the performance and features of the latest Ubuntu install.

I really, really wanted Linux to work for me. And I think it probably could've. Sadly the dev community feels it necessary to make a hundred different forks instead of banding together to make something easy, compatible and generally worthwhile.

Why would you not just show them the damn ports on the back?

Hell, show them the user manual for both the TV and the PS3. Both of them have the letters HDMI in them, that'd be enough to quell any worries.
>>
>>53999463
That's because devs actually used the shitty color bleeding for composite signals to create images, they didn't intend for images to look like they were made of squares.

So here you guys go. I was willing to help my dad with fixing his computer. He's not an idiot but doesn't know how to do these things. His computer is a pos and needs something on it. I was willing to make it 1/2 way decent. He took it to this guy that fixed my old laptop's screen (that's something I'm not doing alone) and is spending 180 on it. My father was going to get me to do it. Oh thanks dad, I feel so loved and trusted with it. I was going to do the same thing this guy is doing too.

Plus my dad owes me around 1k and he's spending 180? Love it

>"I took it to that guy that fixed your screen and he's fixing it for me for 179 and putting real Windows on it"

I'm upset with my father now. He just told me on facebook

I'm also sad :(

>>54017689
the fuck do you do? Show him how to right click? How to talk and blink at the same time?

>>54017699
Well yeah. Mint is just more simple to use for older computers. But then again, I want to put Ubuntu-mate on this 10 yro pc but it wont install. I think I need a computer with at least 4 gbs and this has 2. It's an XP machine at that :T

>>54017743
Let me explain how /g/ thinks:
>If it's not complicated I don't want it
>If I can't do some sort of compiling and spend 2 hours installing a simple program, I don't want it
>If I can't spend 4 hours building my OS from scratch, I don't want it.
>If I can't make it "worth while" while I'm jerking off to my animu waifu, I don't want it!

Everything has to be complicated to /g/, they don't like it simple, they want everything to be their EXACT liking. Shit, even /co/ isn't this bad with DC VS Marvel.
>>
>>54017826
>Mint is just more simple to use for older computers. But then again, I want to put Ubuntu-mate on this 10 yro pc but it wont install. I think I need a computer with at least 4 gbs and this has 2.

My d2500 has 1GB ram anon, and it's running Ubuntu mate just fine.
There are better lightweight distros out there, like slitaz or lubuntu.
