>The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).

>The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).

Did you even read the response?

Even the bare minimum must remain safe, efficient, versatile, and stable, as things progress. The definition of an acceptable bare minimum even varies.

These factors aren't all unilaterally agreed upon so we have forks.

Trust is also a factor. You must bear in mind that those responsible for this are all subject to both the errors and virtues associated with human nature. Pride perhaps being the most obvious on this board.

The only way to avoid this is to have a fairly intractable AI manage all of this. But we want freedom.

The compromises you see as technological are actually the results of SOCIAL compromises.

You're hilarious.

You haven't shared a substantial argument (if at all), certainly not one with any relevance to my writings, and had no idea about my personal values, actions, or needs with which to base one on. For the majority of the time I spoke hypothetically. Stop projecting.

I am interested in a single distro. Its core values serve as justification for others to be created and maintained, but also to become defunct.

I also never said what anyone needs. All I did was acknowledge that other people form standards on different criteria with differing competence involved in the decision-making process.

Posts made semi-anonymously on a Malaysian prison scratching board have nothing to do with support.

Who is enabling? I stated that these decisions are subject to and implied that they are possibly the result of human error. Nothing stated explicitly supports the notion that I would in practice encourage any divergence. Actively, or otherwise.

Let me tell you how Linux users think:

Basically everything has to be them. They have to FEEL like it's 100% theres. That no one else has control over it. Linux users are the biggest control freaks possible. They all think that if they don't know what is going on in it, they don't want it cause it's "bot net" and someone else is doing it. Put it like this, linux users want to play god. They want to create and be there, but in reality, they are basement dwellers trying to be different, trying to act cool when in reality no one fucking cares.

There's nothing ever fuckin good on linux machines
"GUYS I BUILT A LINUX MACHINE!"
"cool steve"
"IM GONNA MAKE A SERVER! AND HOST FILES AND STUFF!"
"why not use windows?"
"OMG IT'S PROPRITARY! YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND! I CAN'T GET INTO THE CODING! I DON'T WANT IT!"
If you're a REAL coder, a REAL hacker, that shit is nothing but a game to you. It's nothing more than you finding out how it works, you can LITERALLY do the same shit on windows you can on linux. Sure, it's simple, it's great for android, handheld devices, game systems and smaller laptops like Thinkpads, chrome books and netbooks, but ask yourself this,"Is it worth it? Is it worth going thru all the trouble to just have something that works vs having to code everything?"

Sure, I agree, Ubuntu, Mint and like 3 others are tight to use but aside from that, there's no real functionality to a common user. All those branches there are nothing more than whiny bitches who couldn't make something work and wanted contol.

Dude, both of those are the "Windows" of linux and you know it. They may not take as long but they still have the same concept. You can get "Windows vanilla" where it's the base but people these days are too simple to do that. Do you know how many people I've suggested switching to linux cause they are simple people? too many and none do it cause they hear "linux" and think it's too complicated, even tho you and I know how damn easy it is to run.

why do you think no devs really make a lot of software for it? Tho it is getting more it's never going to be"the year of the desktop"

>They all think that if they don't know what is going on in it

The problem is with people who changed to Linux as a desktop OS it is usually because they do know what's going on with it. They don't think Windows is botnet because they don't know what's going on. They think it's botnet because the botnet is literally spelled out in the EULA.

It's not a secret anymore. It's not something that the company sneaks in there and doesn't tell you about. Since the success of GMail and Facebook companies have realized that they don't have to hide it anymore or be low key. It's not a matter of sneaking a few kB in with network traffic to get a general idea what your software is running on anymore. They're sending continuous streams of data containing your keystrokes, running processes, screen captures, and info about your stored files. That used to be called a trojan horse. Now it's called an operating system.

Most linux shit you have to install it. If Linux was introduced first, then by all means, I would get it. But it wasn't. Linux has always been seen as "complicated" and people in the world see this word, even if we know it's literally not, they will think this. My dad thought torrenting was complicated, I taught him how, and showed him easy it was, now he fuckin does it. That's just one thing that went wrong one time with one specific GNU/Linux development organization. It's been resolved now, the enhancements to make GNU/Linux more accessible are still out there. Don't be such a shithead.

If there's anything that makes Linux suck, it's its lack of popularity. Nobody bothers coding drivers and applications for GNU/Linux because nobody uses them even though nowadays branching is almost all taken care of by your development environment. It's not worth the cost for businesses. So, nobody wants to make a complete switch to Linux unless they only use their computer as a Facebook machine. Fuck, if Adobe software was officially released for Linux, I'd probably never use Windows again myself. But alas.

And when it comes to drivers, everything has to be complicated. I mean Linux distros aren't even bundled with their kernel headers and commonly used compilers for kernel modules. What the fuck is up with that? Why package Linux with gygabites of desktop shit and not the most basic tools to install drivers?

>I mean Linux distros aren't even bundled with their kernel headers and commonly used compilers for kernel modules.

Are you retarded? I didn't compile one of those drivers. But if I wanted to command would automatically install everything I needed to compile the kernel and modules. If you're too stupid to figure this out then you'll probably do something like pick a distro that bundles Amazon advertisements.
>>
>>55261794
Things branch off because some guy really likes distro x but wants it with option y. So either distro x doesn't want to exert the effort required to support that feature on top off all their other shit or the guy wants to be a special snowflake. So he chooses to support x with y.

That doesn't make the user-friendly improvements on modern distributions less relevant.

>Nope no drivers or applications. None at all.
It was a figure of speech. Just because some drivers exist doesn't make it less frustrating when you bought a $50-$500 piece of hardware that is not supported and is unlikely to ever get supported. You're doing special pleading. Also, your tone is starting to get on my nerves. Mellow out or I'm reporting you.

Have you ever installed a driver for an Epson scanner on a RHEL-based distribution? It's quite a rollercoaster.

> But if I wanted to command would automatically install everything I needed to compile the kernel and modules. If you're too stupid to figure this out bla bla bla jacking off to how smart I am.
What do you mean, "one command"? As one example, installing the official nvidia driver requires you to install the following:
kernel-devel-(version of your kernel)
yasm
gcc
That's on top of having to disable nouveau if it's running. That requires entering run level 3 if not restarting. Installing the driver itself also requires run level 3.

Why are those very basic dependencies not packaged with distros? Unless you are using Ubuntu/all the drivers you need are prepackaged with your distro, then you'll need to actually figure this shit out on your own. It seems easy to experienced people like you and I, but it's a big step up from everyday Windows maintenance.

Plus, why doesn't Linux allow to install a video driver without entering run level 3? That is also frightening to an unexperienced user. Windows will allow you to install a driver that requires resources being used at any moment, it will just require you to restart to finish the job.

Now follow with your next sad attempt at keeping your head in the sand about the challenge that GNU/Linux represents to the average user.
>>
>>55262780
>Just because some drivers exist doesn't mean you shouldn't check to see if something is compatible with your system before buying it.

I couldn't agree more.

>installing the official nvidia driver requires you to install the following

Building the nvidia driver requires you to install that.

sudo dnf --enablerepo='*fusion*' list '*nvidia*' | wc
83 203 5948

it's not like they're prebuilt and packaged for you or anything.

> Words on a screen frightens idiots.

Good. Software is produced to fill a demand. Less idiots means less demand for software for idiots. Less demand for software for idiots the less idiotic software. Like was said earlier that Ubuntu Amazon malware died out because there was no demand for it. Amazon realized paying Canonical to shit up their version of Linux had little return.

>keeping your head in the sand about the challenge that GNU/Linux represents to the average user

I'm embracing that challenge not ignoring it. The average user is okay with a keylogger as an OS. I encourage them to install the OS that is right for them.

Congrations. Babby is able to use Fedora. Big boy. Try doing that in CentOS now and see where it takes you.

And you're the very reason I can't depend on Linux. I need to use software that is only supported for Windows/Mac and it will remain that way as long as manchildren like you enable that culture of "GNU/Linux is a super secret haxer club normyfags get out." You are literally the cause of GNU/Linux's neverending agony. You are a cancer to the free software initiative. But hey, at least you get to feel smug about being able to configure an operating system using shell commands and get angry at people on the internet when they don't "get it".

I form example can't enable the keylogger because my locale is not US English nor is my layout.

Are you genuinely this stupid, or do you simply not understand how the world actually works?

Yes it was me the whole time. I have the rights to Photoshop and Call of Duty: Black Cocks and I'm not compiling them for Linux just so you can't depend on it. I have to perpetuate my secret club by preventing you from pwning noobs and making rare pepes on my secret OS.

Picture related: This smug angry fuck has all of the rights to candcrush and friends and bejeweled. He also has your Bonzi Buddy.

Either you're missing the point, or deliberately misunderstanding.

He's saying that because freetards have an aversion to accessibility as if it were the sun or something, that Linux will never get enough market share to actually get proper support from hardware and software vendors, and he's fucking right.

baka desu senpai

This is why no one uses them for anything but servers and other single task chores. :^)

>If you're a REAL coder, a REAL hacker, that shit is nothing but a game to you. It's nothing more than you finding out how it works, you can LITERALLY do the same shit on windows you can on linux.
You're saying you can easily reverse engineer windows and change whatever you want?
>>
>>55263628
People have been hacking apart the registry and decoding what each key controls since 95. Really no different than linux config files once you get used to each.

Only difference is with linux on rare occasion the documentation is contained inside the config file. Usually you need to google to edit either.

>hardware
Yeah like playing video games on a super stable server OS. There's almost always compatible hardware to do what you want with Linux. You should always check to see if hardware is compatible with your system no matter what you run.

>software vendors
There's no shortage of software on Linux almost to a fault.
>>
>>55263705
I meant hardware vendors like nvidia and ati. Yes they support linux, but their shit is weak as fuck compared to the effort put into their windows drivers.

Also there isn't enough good software to replace actual quality software on mac + windows.

There is nothing on linux as good as illustrator, photoshop, or premiere/sony vegas/avid.
>>
>>55263751
>I meant hardware vendors like nvidia and ati.
Yeah video gamer shit.

>There is nothing on linux as good as illustrator, photoshop, or premiere/sony vegas/avid.

You know what I don't hear in Linux communication channels? Linux users saying I wish there was software for editing pictures and videos.

I've never read anything by professional movie studios saying boy I wish I could run my shit on Linux. I've never heard any kids saying I wish I could pwn noobs on Linux.

Maybe it has been said before but the fact that I've never run across it makes me think that the market isn't there.

Say there were tons of professional photo editors who wanted to do it on Linux but found gimp lacking in one way or another. Well 95% of the work is already done for you. Pitch in and hire one Prajeet to make it more user friendly or whatever.

All of these editors are just UIs to digital signal processing libraries. There are tons of these libraries being used to handle scientific data. FFTW, Lapack, Atlas, Blas, Qhull, tons of codecs, matrix math suites, etc.

So if such low hanging fruit has yet to be picked, then what should we determine about the demand for it?

because linux fucking hates us....

im being serious i cannot actually think of any good reason for the distro madness aside from spite.
>>
>>55256258
Because FOSS is like that. If you don't like something, fork it and do it your way.
>>
>>55257729
well nobody has to wade through 500+ distros of utter bullshit to install wangblows, so in that regard its working pretty fucking well thx for asking.

god if linux could get its shit together windows would be loong dead by now...

according to him, a female officer shoved a large flashlight up his ass.
If that is true, I would call that rape.
Someone whistle at you on the street or regret the next day is not rape, but that is not what this was.
