I have an iPod touch for use in wifi zones and don't need to be connected everywhere I go. Just don't feel like it's really worth it to double my $30/mo phone bill. Anyone else in the same boat? Am I being too cheap?
>>
>>47568579
Nothing wrong with that. I'm kinda considering just getting a flip phone when my current smartphone breaks since I give no fucks about muh apps and I find it adds more distraction than convenience to my life.
>>
>>47568579
Smartphones are literally technological cancer. Stay far away from them, don't even accept as a gift.
>>
>>47568579
>doubling your phone bill
Are you retarded? You buy a $300 phone once and use the exact same sim card as in your old phone
>>
I'm 33 and never owned a smart phone. In fact I haven't had a phone at all for the last 3 years.
>>
>>47568579
I used to do this but then my work started paying for my phone bill so I upgraded.

>>

Why do people use data plans again? They are rip offs

I don't know if that would work with my shitty flip phone. Explain?

$30/mo? What the fuck man?
I pay $12/mo

And i use a Samsung S4 Mini that i bought for $170
>>
>>47569049
>I pay $12/mo

What obscure service provider are you with, and what's included in your plan?
>>
Data plans are not 70$mo unless you're an idiot

You can go to Walmart and get unlimited data on straight talk for 45$

Go to t mobile and they've got tons of options
>>
>>47569111
How's the service though? I haven't tried anything other than Verizon.

You don't need to buy a data plan to use the phone
>>
>>47569131
I get 50mbps on average with T-mobile LTE on their $30 dollar 100 minutes unlimited data plan, throttles after 5GB.

The 100 minutes isn't an issue because I can make/receive calls via the hangouts dialer using data.
>>
>>47569131

My straight talk runs of the at&t network so it's fine. 4g and all that, depending on your area of course.

Verizon has a pay as you go program but it sucks imo, to expensive
>>
I have a fucking great brand new big Nexus 6, with 1gb of data, and unlimited calls and texts.

It costs me £30 a month.

You might not be cheap OP, but you're certainly fucking stupid.
>>
cricket (which is atat) 40$ uliminted talk text, data( throttled after 2.5gb)
>>
>>47568798

This is how Verizon and co. keep getting away with extortionate prices - people have just gotten used to the idea that data plans are supposed to be expensive. Then, even after they learn that there are better alternatives inertia keeps them using the same pricier service anyway because they don't want to chang. Then they rationalize their decision by saying "Well... I might end up in dumbfuckistan, I guess I should be paying an extra $600 a year."
>>
>>47569276
>You might not be cheap OP, but you're certainly fucking stupid.

Not stupid enough to walk around with a comically over-sized phone...

>My straight talk runs of the at&t network so it's fine. 4g and all that, depending on your area of course.
>Verizon has a pay as you go program but it sucks imo, to expensive

Straight Talk is a sub-brand of Trafone and if it's anything like Tracfone you probably get hooked up to whatever network is best in your area. I have Tracfone and I'm on Verizon's network since that's what works best where I live.
>>
>>47569733
Rude.

They come in all shapes and sizes nowadays.
>>
I never wanted smartphones either, but I had an option for a bonus at work - either an older iphone or a lumia 800. I got the lumia, and it's pretty fucking sweet. However, I'm not using any of the things that would make it a smartphone, other than a QR reader and the browser.
>>
>>47569757

No, they sell you a pack of sim cards and then you choose which network you want to use since there's a card for all major networks.

I chose at&t cause they've got the best network in my area
>>

I don't use social networking... *GASP*

Facebook is a vapid wasteland of narcissism. What does its messaging system offer that texting doesn't?

would it be better for my privacy to get a flip phone? I have an android, but I getting autistic with the free software and want to get off googles botnet.

Sure, but the Nexus 6 is especially large. Anything bigger than the Note series is full retard.
>>
>>47568579
>Am I being too cheap?
No, there's no need for constant connection unless you have a very active social life (so noone on /g/). However You could well have a smartphone even without internet connection you know, I myself have stopped using anykind of mobile device like audio players and tablet since being gifted a OnePlus One. Only needing to carry around one device for everything soothes my autism immensely.
>>
>>47569857
>Facebook is a vapid wasteland of narcissism
That it is, if you use it like that.
I only use the tinfoil facebook app for messaging on-the-go, and pidgin on the laptop.

>What does its messaging system offer that texting doesn't?
Instant messaging, group chats for your friend circle, and facebook is more like defcon 5, you can check in when you want to check out your new messages, and it is free.
SMS is more like defcon 3, since you get the messages on your phone if it is on.
>>
>>47568798
My data plan could have been 40$/mo (tmobile 3GB/mo that rolls over) but I chose the 50/mo which is unlimited. I'm not getting throttled to 56 kB.

I used to have ATT and those fuckers wanted to charge me 80/mo

I already am in that boat. I don't need anything fancy or special. I just want to be able to make a phone call if I need to.

>>

I don't know if you've noticed, but people don't use their phones for making actual phone calls as much as they used to. I'd rather have a comically oversized phone with a decent qwerty keyboard over fucking T9 any day of the week.

>>47571096

>a country as small as yours still has gaps in coverage

If by 'gaps in coverage' you mean 'sometimes you lose your 4g signal', then sure
>>
>>47571115

Looking at coverage maps of O2, EE and Virgin. They have significant areas of "No Service" across Wales and Scotland.

>italy
>>
>>47571040

Smartphones would last that long if they were used as much as dumbphones.

With a smartphone I'm constantly dicking with emails and the like, the screen is constantly on. Back when I had a dumbphone it would sit in standby unless actively being used for SMS and calls.
>>
I have a smart phone to reduce my phone bill because I live in a shit country where it costs 30 dollars a month to have calls and texting.

You only take the $70/month plan if you're retarded. I use voip with a tablet data plan. Costs me about $12 a month total. I don't really need a data plan since I'm in range of wifi so often, but the $10 a month for being able to communicate while I'm out and about is a cheap convenience.

Fuck the carriers. They'd actually come into your house and rape your ass if they could put it on a contract.

Fuck Google too.

I've considered this. How can I do this and use my Google Play Streaming service? I like to listen to music on my headphones wherever I go. If I could do that, I'd probably give up my smart phone. I don't like the fact that people don't talk enough as it is.
>>

i was really looking forward to a project ara phone. would be nice.
its all up to the user tho.
>>
I'm in Germany.
My data plan is 4 (four) euros a month. Yeah only 150MB high-speed per month, but even when it's throttled it's still unlimited, and it's fast enough for instant messaging, Skype calls and browsing 4chan (not loading pictures above 100kb though unless I'm willing to wait for minutes).
Unlimited high-speed data is a scam, unless you watch a lot of videos online on your phone. If I want to download something I just use WiFi at home or at college anyway
>>
>>47571344
You guys get it good in America, me:

I bought a new Moto G 2nd Gen for around 135 $ with an unregistered Prepaid card in cash. No contract and no subscription packages. It's about 0.01 $ per MB and 0.04 $ per Min/SMS. So I end up paying about 2 $ per month, mostly for browsing the web and the occassional call/SMS.

The only downside is that iOS and stock Android smartphones are the most advanced data hydra in existence. Google is fuckin Illuminati now.

The answer is that if you don't feel you need a smartphone, it's because you never leave your house.
>>
>>47571402
I leave my house all the time. I rarely use it when I'm out. Don't you think it's kind of pathetic that we live in a society where barely anyone is talking to anyone because they're all too retarded and sucked into their phones?

Plenty of public places have wifi. Why do you need to surf the internet on a street corner?

I did this same setup for years and then consolidated the two when I got a smartphone. Never looked back.

Dumb phones are fine if you're a NEET who has one of or a mixture of the following: no/a shitty job, no life, little friends. Which is most people on this board.
>>
>>47571372

That fucking argument is 100% bullshit. People's lifestyles didn't require fast Internet connections and instantaneous communication.

>buhbuhbuh people lived just fine 50 years ago without all that

The world they lived in didn't require it. Not saying you need the latest and greatest smartphone all the time, but try getting anywhere in life today without a computer and an Internet connection.

the politically correct term is "audiophile"
>>
>>47571682

It really isn't necessary to have the constant internet connection provided by smartphones unless you have a job which requires you to be on call. Wifi is sufficient for most people.

I'm not an audiophile. They jerk over pure sound quality without the actual enjoyment of the music.

How do you know it's absolute bullshit?
What makes that absolute bullshit any less bullshit than the absolute bullshit going in around them?

I understand where you're coming from, but your arguments have absolutely no grounding. Your unnecessarily romanticizing your own views. You just seem kinda jaded.

Of course it is, but it's not without basis. Just look at people around you, At least half of them are too busy staring at their screens to see what's going on around them. Because that's how the military works. You know, deployments at all. And the attitude that you're supposed to have is you're a soldier (and in my case, leader) 24/7, and everyone is salaried in the military, so if thy really wanted to they could make you work constantly.

You don't live in a shithole, yet your post implies you're American. Pick one. Only there do people think it's acceptable to talk to fucking strangers. It isn't. It's fucking rude.
>>
>>47572462
>Chances are, whatever's on my phone is vastly more interesting and "worth looking at."
I doubt it very much.
>>47572468
Actually, I'm Australian.
>>
>>47568579
just get a prepaid phone, you can get a decent tracfone for like 30 bucks, minimum service is 20 dollars every 90 days
>>
>>47572468
>It's fucking rude to talk to strangers
What are you Swedish faggot? I hear those cunts don't like to be interrupted with their already boring lives. People talk to strangers all the fucking time. Just because you're an angry introverted faggot doesn't mean everyone else is.

Welcome to Army.
>>
>>47572481
You think that I should look at the passing scenery, and the girl reading a magazine, and the guy sleeping across from me on the bus instead? The internet provides instant access to unimaginable amounts of information, and yet all of that is less interesting?

This is a textbook "back in my day" type fallacy. You're incredibly narrow minded, anon.
>>
>>47572462
>Why is real life, even in its most static state, something that deserves my attention over any other thing?

It's not healthy to have a cure for boredom in your pocket. Being bored is an emotional state which people are meant to feel from time to time.
>>
>>47572533
I'm not even 25 yet faggot. You're just so hooked and in denial about your smart phone dependency you have no other way of looking at the world. Trust me, I used to be just as addicted as yourself, and it's pretty sad.
>>
serious question, what do you do in public while waiting around for shit. browsing the internet on the phone is the best thing ever
>>
>>47572533
>You think that I should look at the passing scenery, and the girl reading a magazine, and the guy sleeping across from me on the bus instead? The internet provides instant access to unimaginable amounts of information, and yet all of that is less interesting?

It seems you feel entitled to being entertained...
>>
>>47572564
I structure my time so that I very rarely run into situations such as that.
>>
>>47572566
Would reading a book be more socially acceptable to you?
>>
>>47572564
I take in my surroundings. Observe other people, think about things, listen to music, just in general, lay back and think.
>>47572590
Better then wasting time on social media and what not.
>>
>>47572552
You literally just admitted to projecting your personal experiences onto others. Even you can tell that that's wrong, right?

>>47572551
You saying I don't feel boredom?

>>47572566
Is anyone entitled to anything? That's irrelevant, regardless.
>>
>>47572597
Don't get me wrong, I agree with you and don't think people are generally doing enriching things with their phones, but standing around doing nothing is even more stagnating, it isn't like they are buddhists trying to free themselves of desire.
>>
>>47572590
Do you seriously believe reading a book is anywhere near as stimulating as a smartphone?
>>
>>47572564
I have a car so I'm either focused on driving or out doing what I went out to do.
>>
>>47572612
At least I can admit it faggot.
>>47572622
Yeah, but I find it more enriching to take in my surroundings then read something that's not even interesting on the internet. Strangely enough it took me a while to realize everything I was reading was only temporary and not even going to effect my life in any way shape or form.
>>
>>47572632
I don't think comparing a book and a smartphone is in any way astute.

You generally aren't going to know the contents of the book or what they are doing on the phone, so there is no way to know.
>>
>>47572651
I'll spend a few minutes catching up on news feeds or reading articles but I can only do that for so long before it becomes boring, I prefer to put my device away and occupy myself in other ways. I think people that continue to use a phone long past any actual stimulating or enjoyable use into the anxious time killing territory are idiots.
>>
>>47572651
I'm not projecting shit, I'm just defending something from your unwarranted, unfounded beliefs. Your arguments have no substance whatsoever, and you're dogmatically ignorant and closed-minded.
>>
>>47572652
From what I see all the time, most idiots are wasting it power scrolling through Facebook or Instagram. That or shitty pictures on snapchat.
>>47572674
Agreed. I think a few minutes of looking is fine, but if you spend your entire bus trip looking at your phone, then you've got some issues (which is most people these days)
>>
>>47572694
Or playing the hot new flash game.
>>
>>47572622
>standing around doing nothing is even more stagnating

You mean standing around, actually being forced to produce original thoughts and ideas? People who habitually stare at their smartphones in public places are addicted to constant consumption of information.
>>
>>47572693
>I'm closed minded for not wanting to waste my time staring at a digital display all the time.
>>47572720
Yep.
>>
>>47572781
Not to mention the information usually goes in one ear and out the other. It's all fleeting pieces of shit that no one cares about, that means nothing in real life, and will not help you in the future.
>>
>>47572781
I don't think you can generalize all smart phone usage or idle standing in such a way.
>>
>>47571616
Were I live, prepay also gives you a data limit. No need for a data plan.
>>
>>47572801
You're closed-minded for being unable to listen to points of view other than your own. You've latched onto an idea like a parasite, and are doing your best to force it down other's throats whole ignoring any sort of objections. You don't think you're right, you /know/ you're right, and that's what makes you the biggest idiot in the thread. You don't know shit, and neither do I, but at least I'm capable of understanding another point of view.
>>
>>47572862
>at least I'm capable of understanding another point of view.
Not really, you've disagreed with everything I said, so we're pretty much at the same point.
>>
>>47571149
>implying O2 only gives service in Wales and Scotland
>>
>>47568579
a smartphone isnt just a phone to me, it's my calendar (autosync across all my devices), alarm clock, work-out tracker, calorie tracker, music player, camera, remote control for lights in my house and a control for my tv, scanner and a lot more.

If you have a smartphone and "just" use it for calling and texting, you are objectively using your device wrong.
>>
>>47572928
More the point I think people in this thread is the sheer dependency people have on them. To the point of not being able to go without it even in small times of idleness.
>>
>>47572888
I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm arguing. My own views have nothing to do with what I'm saying. I noticed you spewing something you don't understand, and I tried to provoke you into saying something meaningful. Turns out you couldn't!
>>
>>47572961
>Look mum I'm arguing online
>>
>>47572975
At the very least try and start looking at things from perspectives other than your own. Always question your own beliefs, and never discount someone else's. You've got a bit of maturing to do, anon.
>>
>>47573041
I do question many things, but you know, we're both guilty of not wanting to agree with each other. Humans are always very defiant when they have something in their head that they believe is the only right answer. Humans want others to agree with them, we thrive on validation from others.
>>
>>47573063
Just so you know, I do agree with you, with far more extreme implications. I just wanted to see if I could get you to pull your head out of your ass. A lot of people do like to stick to their convictions, but the best people admit to their own cluelessness.
>>
>>47573136
I'll admit I can be guilty of that. I often admit my faults, but often I want to stick to my guns. No one likes to admit when they're wrong.

I still think their is an issue in society with smart phones. But obviously not everyone is like that, and you don't seem like you're like that. I'm sure you'll notice it more now though. Always seems to be the case.
>>
>>47573159
Check out "Industrial Society and its Future." Easy to find essay online. It's a radical piece written by a terrorist, but it's a very good read. He makes a lot of points that I think might echo how you feel (how I feel, at the very least). Not about cell phones specifically, but about how modern society as a whole has a negative psychological effect.
>>
>>47573200
Thanks mate. I'll try and find it now. Sorry about the argument. I have a terrible case of devils advocate.
>>
>>47568579
I am switching to a blackberry soon not exactly a dumb phone but one that is more simple than a true smart phone. I just don't want to be addicted to my phone anymore.
>>
>>47573225
That might be a good alternative. Have they produced any new phones since the Z10 etc? I never hear about them.
>>
I have a Nokia 635. Got it for free. No data. $30 a month. I'm a cheapskate too.

I have a 2nd Gen Moto G on an old T-Mobile pay as you go plan that I've had forever, and I spend less than $10 a month on top ups. There's free wifi everywhere, so I have no need for a data plan to make use of it's features.

Why would you need a laptop and gps? Is it that hard to look up directions before you leave the house, or just call someone for directions? Get some navigational skills, retard.
>>
>>47573552
Not to mention, a gps just sits on your dashboard or in the glovebox. When are you carrying it around?

everyone pls answer my android question

can you update any device's version of android?

im finally buying a smartphone and i notice all the providers list the version as if its locked and thus will be dated/less options, but then i see other sites saying you can simply go to the about screen and update the versions simlar to linux distro updates

what exactly limits the versions, is it merely memory(does SD cards work with the OS install?)

or are there legit hardware limitations that cant run later versions
>>
>>47572437

It is called "service" for a reason.
Military life generally kinda sucks
>>
>>47573566
wut?
>>
>>47573552
I don't drive, and its hella easier to just be able to search a location and get directions instead of calling someone and using their half baked instructions and getting lost
>>
I'm 24 and on the same boat.
I don't really see a point on such devices, I get dizzy if I read while on the bus, and if I'm somewhere I'm doing doing something, not idle.
It really annoys me when you go out with someone and they spend 20% of the the time looking at their phones. I usually flip their phones and tell them to go home if I'm boring them.
>>
>>47573566
unlock bootloader, root, flash any version you want
if stock (e.g.) 5.0 isn't supported go AOSP

How are people this uninformed about pricing of cellular plans? Do people really not know about prepaid plans that cost anywhere from $20-$40 for unlimited talk, text, and data (although data is usually on a speed cap after 2-5GB).

Stop searching for plans on big names like Verizon and AT&T and check out service quality of T-Mobile or Cricket (which uses AT&T towers) in your area, if they have good service you're looking at cheap $30/month prepaid plans and you can use any unlocked smartphone on them because gsm sim card master race.

Cricket can be as cheap as $20 a month, great overall coverage, capped data speeds at 10 Mbps (plenty for anything really)

T-Mobile can be as cheap as $30 a month, their LTE is fast as shit (50-60 Mbps down in many areas), go for them if its got good service in your area.

Seriously get with the fucking times and do some god damn research. Expensive 2 year contracts and cdmaids are for retards, don't get scammed into that shit.
>>
>>47573619

look at any device, it lists the android version

as if thats all it comes with

and theres a million fucking versions

usually the later version coming with a higher price tag
>>
>>47573651
i study in the city, parking in melbourne cbd is either impossible or so expensive may as well of gotten a cab
>>
>>47573663

Some Android phones have priority for OS updates. Go for a Nexus or Moto X and you'll usually have the latest shit.
>>
>>47568579
Why bother with a smartphone when a tablet does the same thing at a cheaper price? 30$ a month is wasteful

Pocket media device? Chinese unlocked smartphones with dual cores are cheap and can play lots and lots of emulators
>>
>>47573653
>How are people this uninformed about pricing of cellular plans?

Marketing, smaller cheaper companies don't pay for advertising so they can stay cheap
