If the above are true, why are OEMs who previously abandoned SD expansion on their phones (HTC, LLG, Motorola) have all recently went back to having them? Face it, SD cards are here to stay and there's nothing you can do about it, Google.

It's not the point. Being able to put everything on your phone once, not having to remove files and put new files on every time you want to update it, and having access to it regardless of internet connectivity are. Plus being a local storage device its infinitely faster than 'the cloud™' and you don't have to rely on the stability of your connection / a third party to access your data.

I'm all for microSD and thing the guy you're responding to is an idiot, but be careful.
Most 4g LTE devices these days are faster than a microSD card, if only by a small amount.
It's one thing that really bugs me with SD, the slow transfer speed. I'd love it if they made a faster protocol, even if it meant putting a controller on the cards, what's an extra $20?

The Sandisk Extreme 64GB does 92MB/s which is 700Mbps. The 128GB Ultra is around 300Mbps which is still faster than any LTE service I know of.

And I'd bet latency on the flash is still better than the cloud.

Hard to believe but prices are higher in my region. But even on fat wallet(site for discussing retail prices of electronics in the US) people have complained about the constantly high prices of memory cards for a while now.

And a class 6 card is no good for me, I want to be able to take HD videos and not have it buffer out after 5 seconds or take 6 16megapixels pictures in RAW and write them to the card, a class 4 or 6 rating is far too slow for that.

Why have a shit tier resolution when you can have a higher one while still maintaining more battery life than previous generation phones at 1080p?

Your case is plausible because nobody would would put an outdated panel with a flagship soc. Even if they did the power consumption differences would be negligible.

Also

>Maximum Resolution of the Eye

>So this is how it is. If a healthy adult brings any display screen or printed paper or whatever 4 inches (100 mm) from his or her face, the maximum resolution he/she can see at is 2190 ppi/dpi. It doesn’t get any better than this for 99.99% of us, except maybe during pre-kindergarten years.
>>
>>42562268
Not the guy you're replying to but given the same fabrication tech, it's almost a given that a chip driving a 1080p display will use less power than one driving an 8k display.

And a lower density display is likely to have greater transmission/luminance.
>>
Are they really implying that it can run things normal smartphones do natively at 8k?
Or is it 1080p sampled using nearest neighbor multiplied 8x?
>>
>>42562343
because someone shopping for a new phone isn't going to look at previous generation 1080p phones but current generation ones. And if the battery life is better than the current generation 8k, that might be the more important consideration.

You've been pixel peeping too much if you think 1080p on a phone is shit-tier.

Just because our current phones will become outdated it doesn't mean the new ones will be shit.
>>
>>42562240
My 512MB also corrupted somehow.
>>
>>42562388
But the 805 driving a 1080p display will almost certainly use less power than the 805 driving a 4K display.

If that can buy me an extra half hour of battery life, I'd definitely go 1080p

Well I was replying to this guy, champ.

>>42562343
>Why have a shit tier resolution when you can have a higher one while still maintaining more battery life than previous generation phones at 1080p?

And if 1080p with the new chips enables longer battery life than 8k with the new chip, I will consider the new gen 1080p phone to be better.

If the only option is 8k, I'll be fine with that too as long as the battery life hasn't deteriorated.
>>
>>42562516
Far from a half hour. Try a few minutes. It's already designed to handle 4k natively at the idle clock, scaling back to 1080p might allow you to underclock it by a fraction of a mw, which is nothing.

4k.

Just look at the history of resolution jumps. Even single generations we've been getting higher and higher battery life.

>>42564973
Bullshit.
You start Russian software and if it can communicate with SSD in Techno-mode you are good to go.
If it fails, you check the database for those memory chips and if they are supported, you unsolder them, and dump them into image. Once you have the image, again you emulate the controller in your software to get the data from the XORed, rotated, inverted etc. data.

Problem with MicroSD is that it has no standard interface, there are no ready solutions to read them. There is almost no support for their controllers. Basically, you receive microSD card in data recovery lab and, you are fucked at least for now.

>>42566971
Spotify can store music offline.
>>
>>42567040
So can Google Play Music, but what if I'm out of available storage space to use? Then I have to stream it, because obviously I don't need additional storage space.

It's like you read half the post and missed the point. The point being that the reason I "need" or rather want that additional storage space is so that I'm able to store all of my music offline without having to use streaming services in the first place.
>>
>>42567028
Oh yeah, that's totally practical for portable use or anything that involves not leaving your phone to sit on a table. Let me just have this flash drive sticking out of the bottom of my phone while I walk around, yeah that's fucking brilliant. And I'm sure there's no change of the USB port on the phone being damaged by the OTG cable being jostled around while you use it.
>>
>>42567075
Then you un-offline something and offline something else.
I'm not actually arguing against microSDs though, I was just pointing out that Spotify can offline. I actually offline Spotify onto my 64GB microSD.
>>
>>42567095
>store on flash drive
>copy to internal storage
>delete from internal storage
>repeat
>>
>>42567096
>Then you un-offline something and offline something else.

That's the problem. If I have to remove some albums to add others, that's either wasting my time (if I do it over MTP) or my data (if I do it over Google or Spotify).

I want the additional storage so I don't have to deal with that hassle at all.

>>42567111
So then why not just use cloud services? In effect, you're basically getting the same results. You're deleting one thing to add another.
>>
>>42567124
Because cloud storage wastes your data.
If you use a flash drive, you waste less time than if you MTP it because you can use flash drives in massive sizes, even HDDs.
I'm saying this for everyone who doesn't have a microSD slot of course, if you do, use it for fucks sake.
>>
>>42567145
That's a fair point, though I still feel like the most practical (read least effort) solutions are SD card, followed by cloud.
>>
Alright hold on, I am new

I have a dumb SD card question. Could I use it for backing up all file types (a/v, docs, exe's). If so can I encrypt it with TC?
>>
>>42567205
Yes to both stupid questions.
>>
>>42561545
I need it, not for my phone, but for my shitty old Android Galaxy S WiFi 5.0.
I listen to a lot of music, about 50% of it lossless and another chunk that's vinyl rip or hi-res.

At the moment, I've got under 500mb free on a 64GB MicroSD card, and I've got a bunch of Moody Blues Quadreel rips ready to go, Just I have no money to get a 128GB card.
>>
>>42568697

Protip: with Opus and high(er) bitrates, you'll never notice the difference and save 10x the space.

>idiots that don't understand this
>idiots that think "hi res" means anything
>idiots, every last fucking one of you
>>
>>42568805
Thanks buddy, I'd rather not convert an album just to put it on my media player, and I'm happy enough continuing on like I am.
I also like being able to play my files on (most common) media players.

The only thing I'll keep converting before copying is comics.
I'm not sure transcoding/converting tracks to Opus would help me much anyway as I'm really banking on a 512 GB storage medium for my PMP.

I'm not an idiot.
I store my music on 1.8'' HDD.

Is there anyway to covert to OPUS without downsampling?
>>
>some people actually try to claim that you don't need more storage in your pocket computer

Wow, its almost like these retards think you don't need more processing power either. Then again, I've seen a handful of arguments against improved battery life here as well. It always amazes me how little a tech board actually knows about and uses technology.

You don't need more processing power you silly man.
I have a dumbphone that lasts almost 2 months on 1 charge and still manages to make phone calls and send sms.
For music I use mp3 with dynamo power generator. It has ultra low power SOC inside that can only play music. Why the fuck would I want more power, space?

Enjoy your shitty battery life boys.

>comparing MB to Mb
Why are you even on /g/?
>>
>>42561545
Remember when bill gates said he couldn't see how anyone would need more than 16mb of ram? Exactly
>>
>>42569542
>misquoting that fake quote
>still repeating quote that was plain to anyone born before 1990 as not possibly true as gates was annoyed by the 640k limit and had to fight hardware manufacturers to get it up to 640k from 512k

Why are you even on /g/?
>>
>>42565159
Except that wont happen because then all the big companies that invested in the abortion that is "cloud computing" will cry.

>I sure would love to listen <random artist> from my really huge music library
>I sure would love to take high res pics of my friends and I having a jolly time
>Oh wow a nigger is going ape shit don't want to miss this! Let me film it
>Nigga goes on and on
There, that would easily take up ~90GB for me, and that's all in a day.

>>42561581
>You can't listen to all of your collection in several weeks, much less on a single battery charge.
>Man I sure feel like listening to some shoegaze
>Oh wait, I only have black metal on it at the moment, and I would have to wait till I get home to listen to some shoegaze
>Now I feel like listening to IDM
>Oh wait, I still have to wait till I get home
Please kill yourself

>Far from a half hour. Try a few minutes. It's already designed to handle 4k natively at the idle clock, scaling back to 1080p might allow you to underclock it by a fraction of a mw, which is nothing.

We'll see. But it's basically guaranteed that 3D games at 4k are going to use a lot more than a "fraction of a mw" more than 1080p. If they're smart they'll implement a pixel doubling scheme to make it 720p.

In any case, pushing fewer pixels means better battery life. I'll probably get a 4k phone in the future just because all phones will have that resolution - but it doesn't mean it was the best way to develop mobile phone tech. And I have 20/10 vision so I can definitely see the difference at greater distances than most.

But better sunlight readability and better batteries are what I want to see. It's pathetic that none of today's high resolution phones have matched the sunlight readability of the 2012 Nokia 808.

>Just look at the history of resolution jumps. Even single generations we've been getting higher and higher battery life.

And we'd see an even faster rate of improvement with smaller resolution jumps. Tradeoffs.

So?
Have I offended /g/ by using non-approved hardware?
How much does Sansa pay shills these days?
>>
I use my external HDD for cloning my internal HDD.
I use my flash drive as a Clonezilla disk.
And, well... I use my microSD card, (with a microSD to SD adapter,) for... um... Nintendo consoles.

Anyways, tell me, Google, if I could use the, "cloud," for any of that. Oh, right, you can't.
>>
>>42561462

I love how the entirety of /g/ assume that microSD cards have no use beyond phones.

I can't shove the cloud into my quadrocopter. There are other uses as well.

I got this cheap tablet running Jelly bean a few weeks ago for 20$, the catch was it only had 4gb storage space. Most of which was already taken up by pre installed garbageso it was <1gb
Get microSD card now have 14.1gb to throw movies, books, and mini series on

What? It's 6000000 times more likely that you won't have reception somewhere than that your SD fails. Also, highly I doubt that most people can get truly unlimited data for a reasonable price in an age when some people still have data caps on their home connections. Also, enjoy paying the monthly fee for your superior cloud storage.

I always thought that phones that shoot 4K use <28mbps and the video looks all shit, but guess I was wrong. BTW what would happen if you recorded it to SD? Could it handle it?
