Vitamin D is a hormone that's basically at the base of your body operation. Immune system, muscle function, nerve function, etc.

Get your levels to between 60-80ng/ml for optimum. 40-60ng/ml is just fine, 60-80 shows more disease resistant stats.

Most everybody in the US has low to deficient levels. So yeah, taking some can provide a 'boost', but it's really more like getting closer to how you should feel.

You need enough to get your level up to between 60-80ng/ml, however much that is.

Being a fat soluble hormone, you can take days worth, a weeks worth, a month's worth, 3 months worth, 6 month's worth all at once (though it has a 3 month halflife so not a lot of reason to do 6 months worth at once).

Vit D researchers recommend 5,000i.u.'s per day as a maintenance dose. That may or may not be enough to bring your levels up.

So UV rays convert cholesterol into cholecalciferol (the same thing in supplements) but this is not the active form of vitamin D3. Cholecalciferol needs to go through a series of reactions in the liver and then the kidney to become the active form. Luckily, most people can absorb cholecalciferol in the intestines. Short answer: no you don't need the sunlight to activate supplemental vitamin D3.

If you've been drinking that much Vit D fortified milk, and your levels are low, that will tell you something different than if your levels are elsewhere in the range.

Daily absorption from sun is based on dozens of different factors. So some people will be ok with 1,000 iu such as you, some will need more. I got awful acne cysts all over my forehead and I'm still dealing with the redness and scars many months later. If you are prone to acne at ALL, 5000 IU's will make it worse if taken over a month.

Trust me, it's too much. It will build up in your system. Take 1000-2000 IU's a night TOPS.
