It isn't like these people open a fucking bag of chips and it's like taking a hit of Meth, no, food "addiction" is more like food "conditioning".
As a kid, my parents decided it easier to throw junk/fast food at me than cook me a healthy meal. It didn't help that as I was a super picky eater that bitched like a spoiled brat until I got something tasty. Because of years of this, unhealthy food was my norm, and I craved it. I found healthy shit absolutely disgusting without even trying it because it wasn't as gratifying and didn't smell as good. At my worst? In High School I was 340 lbs at 5'11". Yeah, a fucking train wreck.
Now, I'm 26. I am slowly doing away with my bad eating habits, and am now around 245 lbs. I have a ways to go, but at 1800 kcal daily intake the pounds are now flying off. I owe all my current progress to /fit/ to actually educating me. That said, I have weak moments and whenever I get hungry? My body still pains me to hit up a fast food joint and get the greasiest most disgusting thing on the menu. Most days I am strong, others I am not. But I am making progress so that has to account for something.
tl;dr, food "addiction" isn't real. Just poor education and bad parenting.

Well i know anecdotal evidence isn't fact but i wanna give my story.
I was a otter mode skinny cardio fag 3 years ago. Then i met my now ex, at the time i was studying, working, running and she asked me to give her more time, so i dropped running hoping to pick it back up when i graduated since i was starting my last semester.
At first i didnt notice how or why we got fat over time, but chips, ice cream and junk food at night on a regular basis does that. She on the other hand got bigger and fatter than me. I decided we should both start running, but she was lazy and me trying to motivate her back fired with alot of angry yelling on her part despite the complaints of her getting fat.
Eventually she stumbled onto tumblr and all that poison about accepting being fat rather than do something about it, eventually i decided to run by myself, but she got the notion from a magazine that if i was losing weight it was because i was meeting someone, eventually she got so fat my dick would hide in my fat rolls to avoid fucking her.
I ended the relationship, mainly due that i didnt want my future to be 2 unhappy fat people being unhappy being fat and not doing anything about it.
Eventually i lost weight, got buff and /fit/ and she blocked me on social media when i went to Eroticon and took a group pic. With my favorite pornstars (of which i told her often about)
