I think it's worth learning how to do it right, like making sure you have the back of the tongue up there - if I remember right I used the technique of blocking off the airway with the tongue and then sliding the tongue forward (still keeping upward pressure) until the airway isn't blocked and then staying there and applying pressure up and forward. It's complicated though and I'm still not sure I'm doing it 100% right, I remember Mike Mew saying it might block off the airway at first until you've created enough space for the tongue to sit on the roof of the mouth as it's meant to.
