I wouldn't be substituting gym if i was to begin climbing regularly. Being and getting strong is productive no matter how mindless a gym visit can be.

I do a lot of martial arts in my spare time so that would be a more relevant comparison. In that, rock climbing lacks mind games and the 1v1 element. I don't drop going to the gym to do martial arts though.

its like 500 dollars for a years worth with rented equipment that sucks ass near me. don't have too many buddies who'd be willing to go often so i'd have to stick to the auto belay systems they have installed, even then, it's all about lats and forearm endurance to maneuver properly, which at least for me, is underdeveloped to say the least. also isn't as fun to go and do post bulk season.

every once in a while i'll go for the 30 dollar for the whole day charge they have, but i don't think i'd make a habit out of it.

I used to rock climb, my best climb was a 7c+. But then I went to London and got fat, and didn't climb regularly for about 2 years. Now I weigh 106kg and started lifting again 2 months ago.

My main reason for switching was that I don't have the time anymore to go climbing as much as my friends do. Seeing them from the outside they are really fucking focused on doing the same movements with smaller wall structures, and steeper walls. It's not really more diverse than lifting in that. Can you do the same thing with more weight vs can you do the same thing with smaller grips. Also it builds muscular imbalance, the flexors and the muscles in the front of the body are developed dysproportionally, which fucks up your posture. Since I started browsing fit and lifting my friend, who is an ultra-defined elite boulderer, no longer looks jacked, he looks underweight. Thanks fit.

I do anon, I just got back from bouldering at Coopers Rock Friday and went to Earth Treks today since it rainded. Now I'm waiting for my skin to heal so I can work my project at my local gym. It's a really fun V7 where you have to do a bat hang walk up the underside of the cave till you get to the actual bat hang and flip around and then bump up a bit to the top. I got the walk down, it's just getting the hang and flipping around

I used to think everyone was really nice, but a lot are like how you described. In my gym, DRG is kinda small and everyone knows each and tries to help out with us only one using your friends if you're doing take away or making a custom route with hard moves, but that's just to push each other to be better. Other gyms I've gone to people are real dicks and try to one up and be asshole to prove they're better. Sorry you've dealt with those guys, not all climbers are like that
