Ugh, I had to use a mobility scooter once after getting a staph infection that nearly killed me.
Don't know why anybody would actually want to ride one beyond the novelty of the first time which wears off the second you have to make a 3-point turn. Backed into some displays a couple of times because the controls were dangerously unresponsive. They're fucking humiliating - even knowing that I was physically too weak to walk that far because of an infection, I still felt like a useless piece of shit just by virtue of using one and tried to use it as little as I could.

I used to work EMS as paramedic. Fuck proper lifting technics with morbidly obese patients like her, it still wrecks your back after 5+ years. It takes multiple personnel to lift them onto a stretcher and some departments don't have the battery powered Strykers that help lift itself into the back of the box. Most of the time the engine (fire truck) was dispatched out was for "lift assists", which is literally when a 300+lb lard ape calls 911 because they fell and can't get up. I've shown up to a call where a fatty like this couldn't reach the phone to call 911 after falling so a neighbor called a week later after not seeing her riding around on her hoverround lately. The sight and smell of that decaying fat bastard is something I'll never forget.

I live by the motto "everyone has one last walk in them". Only in very rare circumstances will I go out of my way to haul someone off. Last I checked I didn't make you morbidly obese and I can only function to what is a reasonable level. Anyone 200lbs and bellow can be handled by my partner and myself. Thing is, I started this at 18 and hope to be doing this until at least 55 as a career 1/3 (ABC) schedule employee with my current department that runs 20-30 calls in a 24 hour shift.
Just because I can, I won't risk my back in my 30s, for one call that in the big picture is meaningless when you compare it to my whole career.
Its your emergency, not mine. I am called upon to mitigate and protect life and property, but first and foremost my life and my property as the millions of dollars that have gotten me to where I am in terms of training, education, years on the job would be a waste if I threw my back out for no good reason.
I see it all the time. Decades of experience, lost... families destroyed as breadwinners are put on disability. All because of a different mindset.
The Fire/EMS service is not like the movies. Working on the ALS unit I will be responsible for moving an individual maybe 10 times a shift. That adds up over time. We arn't talking about big hoorahs where we are running out of burning buildings. Those are once in a career if that.
Also just to reiterate, yes we still have physical standards and still are much healthier and stronger than the general population. From carrying fallen firefighter (simulations which can weigh 200-300lbs when you have an SCBA and full bunks and tools on) to the standard 175lb dummies we drill on carries and drags and lifts.

I get tiny pieces of joy whenever I have to run a call on a piece of shit like this by subtly reminding them how fat they are. It's the only way I've found to stay sane.
I feel it should go without saying, but all of the following examples happen on patients who are completely stable and are in no real danger. I don't fuck around when the patient is in real trouble and actually needs our help.
Example: Instead of telling my EMT to get a line (start an IV), I tell them to "try their best" to get a line. All of my partners have figured this out and they're all in on it now as well. ("Her veins are way in there, you may feel a pinch ma'am").
Or when I call for extra resources I mention that I need a lift assist on a _____lb patient. I always add 50 lbs to what I think and I make sure that the patient hears me. I don't have to mention her weight but it's justifiably pertinent information and it makes me and my crew happy.
Or when their vitals are abnormal (they always are, news flash: if you're 600lbs, you're gonna have high blood pressure), I make sure to ask the patient if those are normal for them and mention to my partner that it's outside of the healthy range. I don't really give a rat's ass whether it's "normal for them" but it's just another way I can get my sick kicks.
I figure it's the least I can do for the inevitable back injury that we'll all face.
