Bit of background here. This friend and I met in a mental ward two years ago. I know, shut up. Both of us have made huge progress in recovering. She's been there for me when I've needed it.

We don't reall live close, but I can get to her if I need to. Problem is I've got work and uni and gym and lots of my own life to deal with. If she really wanted help with weight loss, I'd be there for her, but with all her self hate, I just don't think she's there yet. She's not landwhale fat. Feminist here. It's natural to kick back if you don't have to routinely feel paranoid and hyperaware of your appearance/demeanour when you enter public spaces. Women are also taught to keep their legs together in the most literal way but this is more an issue of being conscientious as a human being, not men being evil. There are very few guys who seriously believe they are entitled to more space and need to take it up to seem dominant or some shit.
If you're relaxed and sitting with your legs apart but there is an abundance of seats there is no problem. If someone clearly needs the seat and you're busy being casual everywhere, refusing to close your legs then you're just an asshole. I'm a young woman myself but I've noticed a lot of guys and girls in their late teens/early 20s with a general attitude problem that do it. I generally put a lot of energy into staying out of peoples way to avoid the awkwardness of them having to ask me to move.

most comics suck as literature because they are almost always built around 'hooking' you in for the next issue and condensing a story into a run of 20-page mini-stories. What's more, companies that produce these are liable to cancel your story half-way through so you also have to prepare to end it suddenly at any time. A few writers can create a single story of worth in only 20 pages, but this is bad for sales, so obviously doing so is not encouraged.
comics sell to children, so anything that isn't written for children is generally written to make people feel more mature and smart for reading them. Ham-fisted Progressive or Anarchist political statements, speculative fiction that takes a back seat to cool robot art, superheroes who 'defy conventions', etc. The comics in mainstream that are not simply media devices are held as masterpieces, although the writing behind them is often nothing new in terms of literature and is simply the first time the idea has been brought to that audience.
In terms of the newspaper comics, web-based comics, etc. the same follows. The act of releasing single pages at a time requires something significant or funny on every page, which can severely limit the story-telling potential. Succinct, thoughtful dialogue is what separates the good literature here from the standard gag-a-day strip or plodding drama. Strips like Calvin and Hobbes, Doonsbury, etc. are often cited as the best of these. It's difficult to rate something like this on its literature because there may be 1200 strips, with 1180 duds and maybe 20 really flawless strips. Would that be considered a good comic, or simply a bad comic that created something meaningful?

How do people even get obese? I'm 235 at 6' 1", the fattest I've ever been (depression, booze, and no lifting stole bt gains), and it sucks. I have a gut, so getting on socks and shoes is fucking miserable. Eating just a little bit makes my pants feel like they're going to burst. My face looks fat. It's obviously not always about fat people having less willpower. I mean, skellies do exist. Do skellies stay that thin because they have the greatest strength of will? Clearly appetite can vary between people. Willpower can still overcome it. Genetic predisposition towards obesity is a problem, not an excuse. However, for some people it might be better to focus their energy on doing what they are good at. Some people are innately stupid. Stupidity is not an excuse to not do your homework as a child, but it might be a good reason not to stay in college to get a PhD. I don't think everyone without a PhD is just lacking the willpower to get one.
I guess my point is this: If you yourself are not in the process of getting a PhD right now, who the hell are you to look down on obese PhD applicants? These are people that are clearly better than you at some things, but worse than you at others. Why should they have to be both fit and smart when you're only one of those things? I think subconciously you all believe that olympic athletes are born with their talent, and mathematicians are born with their intelligence, and that means you alone worked for your fitness. So men's interaction styles seems condescending to women, who just want to get to know them rather than hear how much the person thinks they know about comic books or whatever.
