I cringe very time I'm visiting with my 8 year old niece and she asks for something to drink and is given a can of pop by my sister or the dad instead of just water or milk. While talking to her on Skype yesterday she told her parents she was hungry so they gave her a bowl of ice cream.
It sucks because it's hard to say anything about it to her parents without them immediately going into defense mode. I don't mean to step on their toes but I really worry about the unhealthy eating habits their teaching her.
Luckily she's a very active kid, being involved in cheerleading and other physical activities. So the only thing I can do is support her love for sports and things, and hope for the best. She knows the difference between what's good for her and what's a "sometimes" food. It's her parents who are the problem. Instead of grabbing an apple to snack on they'll give her a bowl of cheesepuffs. I think what upsets me most is that she's the kind of kid who wouldn't complain if given an apple. She loves fruits and veggies but is fed junk food instead.
