What's a good weight for a dumbbell bench press?

I hit a new plateau with 5 reps of 75lbs
>>
Thats what i do

I really dont want to give myself a concussion
>>
>>36796878
Any weight that is hard is a good weight. What a dumb fucking question.
>>
>>36796920
>Any weight that is hard is a good weight

I wish that was more of saying on /fit/
>>
>>36796878
A respectable one? 60kg+
>>
10 kilo is good
>>
Why don't you put the weight on a bar and bench like an adult.
>>
>>36797572
B-b-but muh stabilizers!
>>
I don't know about this whole stabilizers thing. There's no such thing as a stabilizer muscle obviously but rather the muscles in your arm, forearm and chest/back are working antagonistically so you don't turn into jelly and have the weights drop on you.

This same effect can be induced by the regular bb bench press I think but probably not to the same extent. If there's one advantage of the db press over the bb press it's an increased ROM. Also your arms are not as restrained as by the bb so you can move them around a bit so you benching in a comfortable position without injuring yourself.

I do have a question regarding the db press however:

>how to get in position?

I'm using 85lb dbs and I'm finding it much harder to swing back into position while maintaining a retracted scapula/proper form.
>>
>>36797955
I don't do 85 lbs desu but ive been doin 75 for reps and sometimes doing 80 for lower reps, but im sorta having the same problem.

The best soluion I've found so far is to set up like normal with the dumbells as far up on my knees as I can, and then I kinda toss my whole body back while keeping my knees bent so my knees kinda push them above my body.

Essentially I'm maintaining the same position as when I was sitting, but I just sorta fall back on my back so I'm resting on my back, not my butt. This way the dumbells are always supported by your knees and arms, until you're all the way back of course and they're above your head.
>>
>>36798003
I hork them up onto my legs and have them really close to my body. Breathe in and fall back. Pull them into my chest and from there start flaring my elbows out and get into position. Then push up for 1st rep.

It sounds like you are starting out with arms extended?
>>
>>36797955
I generally dont worry about scapulas and all that bullshit that is imperative with a barbell. Only thing i make sure pf is get a good arch and keep elbows from flaring to far out. Pressing 95 lbs currently have had zero injuries as opposed to numerous times on barbell.
>>
>>36796920
Wow decent advice on /fit/, now that's rare.
>>
>>36796878
150s
>>
I hit 100s on incline for ten. Current body weight is 185 and I'm 6'2
>>
>>36796878
100% of your weight
>>
i hit 120 for 9 reps of 3 sets

5'6 175 pound manlet here
>>
>>36798631
Both or each hand?
>>
>>36796938
I think he meant what is a decent amount for someone whos been lifting awhile. 100s are the 2 pl8 of the db world.

>>36798783
Funny that this needs clarifying much like how some people think 2 pl8 is 135lbs.
>>
>>36798003
Thanks man, I'll try and use that technique.

Actually, like >>36798314 said, if this end ups with me beginning the press in an extended position that would be great. Maybe this is improper form or whatever but I find it very hard to get that 1st rep in during my third set because I would be starting at max flexion (lowest point) and I'm already fucking exhausted.
>>
>>36798830
What about incline? I work with 80s, is that good for a 180lb 6'0 white male?
>>
>>36796878
In my prime I benched 200lbs dumbbells for sets of 12, but recently I had a couple of surgeries to fix my back. I'm currently on the road to recovery.

It's not all bad though, I got inducted into the bodybuilding hall of fame and now I sell my own pre-workout.

Really? I've never been to gym with 200lbs dumbells. I've only seen them go up to 160lbs.

What's you weight and height? How long did you lift for?
>>
>>36799195
back in my day I did sets of 210lb for sets of 20

110 for reps is what I would say is great.

40-60 being beginner mode
60-80 being intermediate
80-100 being good
100-120+ Being amazing mode
>>
>>36799341
is that per dumbbell or total
>>
>>36799341

kg, that is
>>
>>36799195
How did you get two 200-lb. Dumbbells into position without 4 spotters?

Anon, like >>36798003
I put the power blocks (tm) lel, on my knees while sitting exactly where I'd want my ass to be when I'm laying down. I then breath out, lift with my knees and hands, and rock back. As I'm moving backwards to press potion I let the momentum of my backers motion help me raise the weights to full extension. If you practice this and time it well its nearly effortless to get into position.

I would say 120lb DB prsss.
Not to sound edgy, not to inspire anyone to achieve more/less. Simply for the fact there's a 46 year old one armed man in my gym who straps his shoulder up to a 110lb DB, grabs a hold of the other, and cranks out a solid 8.
>>
>>36799410
Damn that sounds like hell. Good for him though

That right there is something to behold.
>>
I bench 130lbs each hand for 5 and I look like shit

This is why genetics matter more than anything. Stop caring about what other people do and just worry about yourself you fucking faggots.
>>
>>36799449
Eat more, high reps high volume, and stop lying you dont bench shit
>>
>>36799449
>bench 260lbs with dumbbells
>hasnt realized size comes from hypertrophy training
>>
I've never been able to get into dumbbell bench press. My arms start shaking and threaten to give out at least a few reps before my chest does, and I have to finish before I'm "there" or else risk caving in my skull.
>>
>>36799464
Yes I do. I'm 6'4" 210lbs and can DB bench 110lbs x10 easily. My cutting calories are probably more than your bulking calories, so don't talk to me about "eating more".

My barbell bench is 265 for reps last I checked but I never do barbell shit because its gay for long arm friends like myself.
>>
>>36799474
I never said I don't do hypertrophy training. I was sharing my strength numbers.
>>
>>36799480
It's so rewarding once you get with it doe.
>>
>>36799495
Same senpai, I actually have the same exact build you do. That's weird. Long arms and all.
>>
>>36799495

Wow. I totally believe you, anon.
>>
>>36799480
Lighter weight, more reps. Focus on form and you'll unlock the world of dumbells.

I don't care if you believe me man, just sharing my experience.

Here is me DLing 425. And yes I know my left arm looks like snap city. Dont know why it wasnt locked out for this one.
>>
>>36799195
Yeah budday! LIGHTWEIGHT! ...errbody wanna be a bodybalda but don't nobady wanna lift no heevay ass weight

ain't nuthin but a peanut
>>
>>36799602
>425
So approx 7 months into SS?
>>
>>36799629
What?

No I did SS for a few months and got to 335 or so, then did Madcows for a bit and hit 405 but it was very very ugly. Switched to a lot of hypertrophy stuff for a few months and then retested my DL because I hadn't done it in a while and this is it.

I started off at 6'4 173lbs, then got to 240lbs and now I'm 210. I'm also old as shit.

So suck my fucking balls.
>>
>>36799660
33?
>>
>>36799667
Close actually, good guess.
>>
>>36799680
Thank you. I like to think I have an eye for these things. You having light hair skews my judgement.
>>
>>36796878
I do less than you 30kg 3x8

I'd say good is 50kg
>>
>>36799660
You stopped linear progression before even 4 plates.

I... what? What is it you want me to say?
>>
>>36799928

Regardless of what /fit/ likes to tell people, most lifters don't make it that far on linear progression. Even Zach, Rips own superbulk protégé, didn't make it to a 3plate squat before moving onto weekly increases.
>>
>>36799410
>one arm
>grabs a hold of the other
With what?
>>
>>36799970
He straps 1 110lb DB to what remains of his left shoulder joint then proceeds to grab the other 110lb DB with his right hand. Sorry if I wasn't clear with that.
>>
>>36799987
Hes gonna be asymmetrical as fuck
Torque way higher on longer arm
>tfw he will never make it
>>
>>36799996
He's already assymetric.
...duh.
