My younger brother who is 17 has just been told by his GP (doctor) that people shouldn't lift until their early 20s because their spine is still growing.

Doc even says that stuff like benchpress is a no-go, as it still partially loads the back.

What should my younger brother do? He doesnt want to fucking wait for 4-5 years to start lifting.
>>
He should get another doctor.

Medicine, much like psychology and modern physics is pretty much just a jewish meme.
>>
Doc is probably jewish
>>
...start lifting anyways?

The only thing I'd say to be careful on is deadlifts and squats, if your form isnt perfect/ have hyperlordosis, get ready for snapcity.

That doctor sounds like he mention that patients are overweight everything they might be morbidly obese
>>
>>36792915

what are you trying to say here

>>36792894
>>36792898

he says that the spine is only designed to carry 15-20kg as well as your body, and that lifting is very dangerous because of the extraordinary weight people can put up.

on the one hand fuck him, but on the other hand, he does have a medical degree...

The problem is with the interpretation, then the Chinese whispers (you don't know what was actually said, he might say things just to generate his own outrage porn story), not the advice.

Your growth plates seal at around 24 years old, you can lift and exercise, the issue is with teens wanting to know what their one rep max is, because chances are they have shitty form and put a lot of pressure on their joints, which can cause many problems.

Also, teenagers have a greater range of motion in their joints, which can cause issues if they fuck up any tendons or ligaments.

So TL:DR doctor was playing it safe, your brother can go and lift, but not after performing cardio, tired, under the influence of drugs/alcohol, and he shouldn't try for strength building or 1 rep maxes.
Get him to do hypertrophy and endurance.

What if his goal is to compete in powerlifting?
>>

Med school doesn't cover too much concerning excessive physiology brah. Especially covering resistance training, and especially in the past (assuming your doctor is older). You're doctor knows a lot of shit. He's a smart man. But unless he takes the time to do the research himself, he doesn't know much about this topic. Maybe you should find a doctor who's fresh out of med school. They likely had more training on this. Especially if it looks likes he/she lifts themselves.

OP is the younger brother you dense mofo
>>
>>36792881
I'd say at 17 he's more than old enough. He should just make sure to watch his form to make sure he's doing them safely. I'd stay away from deadlifts, squats and OHP though because he could still have some growth left in him. What's his height?
>>
>>36792969
That anon wasn't very clear. The point is, injuries before your growth plates close can really fuck you up. If he doesn't injure himself, he's fine. Teens tend to do stupid shit like load up 3 plates their second day lifting and then snap their shit. But no injury, no problem.
>>
>>36793008

5'9

Are you serious? I'm pretty sure squats, deadlifts and OHP dont make you shorter.
>>
>>36792969
He will get stronger by doing hypertrophy/endurance, which will give him a good base for it.
I guess the bit where I said

Ignore this guy OP, hes trolling

>Doctor tells your brother it's perfectly fine to lift
>Your brother is a fucking retard and fucks himself up
>This could come back to hurt the doctor

The reason he says your brother can only lift max 15-20 kg is because it is nigh on impossible to injure yourself with babbyweight like that, and thus he keeps his own ass safe.

Meanwhile my PT (note; an actual physical therapist, not some shit general MD) was very positive to the idea of me lifting weights when I was 17. So it depends.

Jump out of a window and try to meme your way out of gravity
>>
>>36793033
That was ignorant. It depends on their specialty. Your general practioner probably doesn't. An orthopedic or sports doctor probably does.
>>
wow, a bunch of e-doctors criticizing a real doctor's advice. Welcome to /fit/

ask jeff seid if it hurt him starting lifting young...
