You can start by researching your local bike laws

I mean in terms of fitness, required reading (besides the laws and regs). I'm not aiming to become a pro rider, though.

Where will you bike? Like forest trails, roads etc.

Definitely roads/paved trails. I figure it'll mostly be a commuter bike.

Then anything works just fine, ez mode would be something with big and thin wheels and a frame made of carbon fiber (more expensive) or aluminium. Aluminium is the better but I prefer carbon.
But even a mtn bike would do just fine, bit more resistance tho

If your goal is speed you should go with a smaller frame, but those aren't very comfortable if the road is bad/bumpy

Go on craigslist/kijiji, go to the road bike section. Find a ~100 road bike with a good steel frame. Buy it.
Don't buy anything expensive until you've been biking for a minimum of a year.
If you have questions go on /n/ and go to the buy bike general and they'll answer your questions.
