What are some /fit/ approved gyms in the US? I was going to get a membership at my local Y, but wanted to know /fit/'s opinion of it first. I'm a newcomer to fitness.

anywhere that the dumb bells go to 150lbs

Anywhere you can do some heavy fucking deadlifts.

Anywhere with a squat/power rack, heavy dumbbells, maybe a cable station thing. So 50% of commercial gyms.
I go to anytime fitness as an ausbrah, I believe they have those in the states too
I piggyback on my mom's family YMCA membership. From my understanding, their weight equipment can vary widely by location.
Mine is pretty good. 2 squat racks, 2 power racks, 2 regular bench, 1 incline, 1 decline, dumbbells up to 130, and they even have oly weights.
also your usual mix of gym machines. Only complaint I have is that they only have 2 dedicated benches for the dumbbells. why
GENERAL RULE OF THUMB
if it has a nationally recognized name, don't go there

I go to an Anytime here in Washington state. Somewhat small but it's not a big problem often.

I go to Anytime Fitness myself (Texas). It's small, but it has all the essentials and the management is cool.

Management at mine is shit. The PTs don't do shit. They don't clean up after people or tell them when they fuck up so there's plates loaded on everything, benches missing and bars in ridiculous places all the fucking time. Plus they're mostly dicks (only one is actually cool, the rest just ignore anyone who looks like they're there to train seriously). It's right next to my house though so I put up will all the garbage.
