I started lifting at 330 pounds and never did I feel anyone in the gym making fun of or being condescending to me. Some people offered words of encouragement and I took them as exactly that.
It helps when you're actually putting in the work, of course. It's easy for people to sound honest when they've observed how serious you are. It makes them mean what they're saying.
If you're the type of fatty that is horribly insecure and every second in the gym is spent concerned about how others view you (hint: nobody cares) instead of focusing on your work, then no shit the compliments will sound insincere. The reason they sound insincere is that you've done nothing worth complimenting and you know it.
