The program works well for beginners.
Reading the whole book is a waste of time for most people.
The information and cues for the big lifts isn't bad, but it's not great either.
You'll learn more by trying different techniques yourself.

but in all honesty it was a good start for lifting it teaches you important lifts like squats deadlifts bench etc.
idk about the diet i just sort of ate more protein in my diet and cut a lot of crap food out but after like 3 or 4 months i moved on to different programming

I've done Stronglifts which is basically the same thing and literally thrown 30-50 pounds on all my lifts in 2.5 months. You really can't argue with those types of results.

My wife's boyfriend said SS is for losers and faggot white boys, and that I should stick to the cardio classes. I think he does something called a 'brosplit' but I'm not sure. He always seems to be using machines and never training legs.

Should I alternate squats and deadlifts?

I cannot PR on both exercises on the same day since squts drain the fuck out of me, and so I've been alternating them, but my squat is only at 2pl8 and very difficult while my deadlift is at 3pl8, also very difficult, so I feel there is an imbalance.

Its a good first week program, most people's lifts will be ready for something more advanced after that however.

If you feel comfortable coaching power cleans, it's good. If not, strong lifts uses rows. Personally, I did Greyskull LP (google phraks greyskull for a printout). I like the decreased lower body frequency since I run, and the AMRAP set at the end makes deloads more tolerable. At the end of the day, any 3x5 or 5x5 linear progression compound focused routine is a good place to start

I'm not hating on SS though? I eat around 3k calories at 5'9, so I definetly could eat a bit more however, so I'll up my surplus.

SS took me from 85/140/165ish/205ish to 122.5/185/235/300 in the past 2.5 months I've been running it, just looking for advice as I have a hard time doing both on the same day and I don't want to eat too much more since I'm already 178lbs

Are you still squatting heavy every workout? Rippetoe recommends alternating heavy and light squats once recovery becomes a problem
(Light = 80% of the previous heavy workout), you could deadlift at light squat days.
Check out his book practical programming for strngth training for more strategies to extend your novice progression phase, pretty good shit.

Thank you senpai, I will try that. I have been alternating DL/squat recently but I will change it so that on days I do deadlift/OHP I also do light squats.

Before I did:
A
Squat 3x5
Bench 3x5
Chinups 3xF
accessories

B
Deadlift 1x5+
OHP 3x5
accessories


I will add 80% squats on B days. Also, I used to do 80% deadlifts for 3x5 on A days but I feel like it started too hamper my recovery since I had a hard time pulling 300 today and rounded my back hard on the last 2 reps, whereas last week I was able to do 295 for 6 reps with good form.

Any opinions on the light deadlifts hampering progress? I feel like it may be because I only ate half a bagel this morning and then went to the gym when I usually have a 1000 calorie meal before going to the gym so I was just hungry.
