Internal rotation is a meme. I've talked about this to very deep detail many times before, but to summarize it all up: external rotation prevents you from sawing through your supraspinatus tendons - and you shouldn't worry about "isolating your lateral delts" by using pink dumbbells and internally rotating your shoulders (that's a meme for roiders), when you could be using heavy dumbbells and involving your entire deltoids into the movement instead.
>>
>>36525352

Can you pause the press? I've been playing around with this at 70% working weight for the last week: stopping at the clavicle to eliminate the stretch reflex, combined with a 2 second pause right about when you get your head under the bar. That seems to be that point of no-return for me, and spoto press and paused squats have helped tremendously with their respective weak-spots.

No, all lifts are important, OHP mostly hits shoulders and like chest and somewhat upperback area, if that's what you want to get ripped on, then yea sure, but you need a good combination of everything. Look into strongman 5x5, it's a good starting point if you're actually being serious in your question.

>>
>>36522952

You're an idiot.

If one is concerned with strength, the OHP and to a slightly less extent the bench press are critical components of that.

If one is concerned with "aesthetics," I imagine that includes deltoids, triceps, and pectorals. None of which do power cleans, chin ups, or rows work to a significant degree

>>
The 1pl8 OHP standard is a little low if you ask me. I know you use smaller muscles to move it and yadda yadda, but the fact remains that sixty kilos is not a lot of weight, period. That said, depending on how/if you train it, I can see why it would take some time to accomplish. I can easily see someone who trains for Strongman or WL getting there before the average fitness enthusiast or someone whose training doesn't include OHP.
I'm also not saying that it's a bad measure of general fitness, but if you're gonna brag about something, brag about the 3pl8 squat or 4pl8 deadlift.
>>
>>36522858

It's quite important for traps (not the sexually confused tripfag), triceps, and deltoids. There IS other shit that can work these, but OHP will save you some time, strengthen your shoulders which is handy for long term joint health, AND give you that functional strength needed to shove a male cheerleader overhead when the female cheerleaders tries to tell you that you aren't an athlete because golf isn't a sport and you have mild autism.

But that might just be me.

Whether you want to believe it the majority of /fit/ who are honest about their lifts are truly stronger than what is considered the norm unless your country literally trains its people to be in olympic sports then you're a fucking super human.
Seriously even a 2Pl8 squat is pretty impressive it always puts a smile on my face when I can see someone can at least do that it shows they've taken the gym seriously.
>>
I just started SL 5x5 a month ago and OHP gives me the most trouble in terms of progression

Although considering a 1 plate OHP is supposed to be proportionate to a 2 plate bench, 3 plate squat, and 4 plate deadlift I guess it makes sense

There's nothing wrong with paused reps.
They take the stretch reflex out of the equation, thus not allowing you to lift as much weight. But on the other hand, the increased strength and endurance demand will make you stronger.
Many people use paused reps to make them stronger at the bottom of the movements - spoto bench and paused squats are very popular.

Also, if you do the concentric movement (pressing) as fast as possible, pausing will also train your power generation.

But, I don't recommend using paused reps as the primary lift. I'd say keep it as assistance, and still do the non-paused movement as the main lift. This is because, again, you can't lift as much weight with the paused reps.

>>
>>36529601
because idiots generally do tons of pushing without working their back, so by telling them to do more pulling than pushing they end up doing about even
>>
>>36529612

Yes.
>>
>>36529601
It is because pulling uses more back and biceps muscles, where as having a strong back is very important for good posture. Most people have rounded back and internally rotated shoulders, which is associated with a weak back and tight anterior delts and pecs.
That guy is just trolling however, 90% of fit is trying to look better naked/for chicks, where you need big pecs, arms (triceps are 70% of the upper arm) and broad shoulders. All associated with pushing exercises.
>>
>>36529577

>But, I don't recommend using paused reps as the primary lift. I'd say keep it as assistance, and still do the non-paused movement as the main lift.

Of course, currently doing paused press on bench days and spoto press on the press days.

I tried googling the paused press but the most I found was a discussion about eliminating the stretch reflex at the bottom. I guess I'll see how it feels Monday. It doesn't seem like anyone really pauses the rep in the middle of it, which had me worried there was potential for injury that I didn't see.

Thanks for the input, TC.

I'm pretty sure that either your bench or OHP form sucks.

1 plate OHP should be enabling a 2 plate Bench. So you either aren't OHPing with proper form as in rest the bar on the delts, push up, lock out, repeat or simply fucking up Bench with either not having the proper leg drive or shoulder/hand positioning.
>>
>>36526946

>Most normal people have trouble doing the bar you deluded muscle man.

No they don't. At worst they might be completely unadjusted to the movement, but that can be fixed with 5 minutes of practice. The only people you can reasonably expect to struggle with the just the bar are geriatrics and amputees.

A 2 plaet squat means you've been lifting for almost two months. You're basically trying to say that, because you can break 100, you are better at golf than someone who doesn't golf AT ALL and are therefore a good golfer. Which is wrong. You aren't a good golfer, or anything close to it, until you can break 80 on the reg.

Likewise, a 3pl8 squat is not impressive for a male with all his limbs between the ages of 15 and 50. It just means you know what you're doing and have been doing it for MAYBE 6 months. It's the weightlifting equivalent of breaking 90.
>>
>>36529310

I have had people staring in absolute wonder at me squatting 530 lbs. Now, that IS a considerable amount of weight, I weigh 230 lbs. That's recreational powerlifter tier, and these people are acting like I'm God come down from the heavens to bless humanity with his Holy Squats.
>>
>>36529577

>pausing will also train your power generation.

No it won't you unlifting dipshit. Actually doing the press FAST will do that. The best thing pausing might do is increase your maximal strength (which will indirectly increase total power), but even then it's only ideal for more advanced lifters who aren't making mad gains with the regular movement.

You need to stop posting your shitty, overworded advice and LIFT SOME FUCKING WEIGHTS. It will be illuminating.
>>
>>36530238

A press is a category of lift where you push the bar away from the center of your body. Like in the standing two hands press, the bench press, the leg press, and the standing barbell leg press.

Calling the Standing Two Hands Press simply "The Press" is a conceit that exists solely to fuel the speaker's smug and artificial sense of superiority, and will leave people who know what they're talking about asking "WHICH press?"

So if I taught a German class, and let's say I was a really good teacher, but I didn't speak a word of the language would you take my course? No.

Knowing the material and having experience with the material are two different things. Having the experience to be able to interpret and apply your knowledge is just as important as knowing the material is. All trappy is is a talking version of SS. It's opinions are whatever it read in SS or on SS forums. It's ability to actually work with and help individuals is limited to what it read and heard people say. This is why a strength coach needs to have at least halfway decent numbers to be respectable.

I can bench 295 for one rep after two years of lifting and I've never had a single injury from benching. I would say, based on that, I could help coach someone who is a total newbie because my number is halfway decent and I never got hurt doing it.
My deadlift is at 405 and I injured myself very badly twice performing the lift. I would not say I'm qualified for helping coach a newbie on that lift because it's a shit number and I obviously have much to learn before I can go telling others what to do.
Trappy, as far as I'm aware, has no impressive numbers whatsoever, so I'd say it isn't qualified to give any advice on anything.

Not hating - I love my trap porn as much as the next anon. I am just criticizing the dick riding white knights. None of you trappy fans would support it if it wasn't a cute trap is what I'm getting at here.

>inb4 lel @ weak lifts
If any of you supporters need to listen to anything trappy says, you aren't anywhere near my lower-intermediate stats so fuck off I'm trying to have a legitimate discussion about our tripfriend.

Eh, brah - listening to TC's advice actually got me to just about where you are. I've been recovering from a severed AC ligament and she suggested spoto-press to help build strength in the upper back at the bottom of the lift. I had plateaued at 185 with pain, currently repping 245 without pain. Haven't gone for a 1RM but I'm guessing I could hit just about 280. Been at this for just about 10 months.

The thing is, Trapster's only been doing their thing for a little more than a year and a half. Most of the advice given is doled out to people who are beginners - people who are generally trolled to shit on this board. Even though she may be doing it for attention, it's still helping people.

The thing that gets me is if we all bust our asses instead of trolling each other over pronouns or trying to get e-boipussy the newbs could actually start to make it, and TC might actually become a really solid coach.
>>
>>36535082
Huh. When you put it that way trappy doesn't sound that bad. If it does inspire decent lifters to quit trolling and DYELs from giving poor advice that would actually be great.
Eh I'm not exactly a supporter of trappy but I guess I now support what it's doing. If everybody wasn't a lazy piece of shit and read SS and other good books it'd be ideal, but this is the next best thing.

Things got pretty wild about a month ago - TC was constantly avatar-fagging and basically posting porn every once in a while. The Trappy Internet Defense Force was going nuts over it, following them to every thread she showed up in - they'd banter back and forth with their <3's and bby's. Shit got weird though, real sexual as is the mode of frustrated internet incels. Then a portion of /pol/fit/ formed the Schutstrollfel and a war broke out for a week - dozens of threads a day demanding TC leave or an hero, white knights going crazy, TC flip-flopping about leaving the board altogether.

It's a shame. It seems like TC knows what's up though, she's not really posting for attention anymore. The Schutztrollfel just makes things worse by spamming 'kill yourself'. And the Trappy Internet Defense Force should just fucking lift instead of jerking it to someone half way across the world - then maybe they'd get a little action of their own.

I just wanna get better at lifting weights, mang.

The analogy wasn't great but everything else he said has merit.

I think trappy is doing a great thing for the board so I'm not trying to be a douche, but instead I'm just being rational.

>average for lifters

Depends on how you define lifters.

If you mean people who have been training off of a good program religously and with good nutrition/sleep for at least 6 months, then yes that is pretty average, if not above average.

For the general gym goer, that is definetly above average.

Depends on perspective senpai
>>
>>36531197
Of course it will train your power generation, more time under tension in the bottom of the lift will make you explode out of the bottom and make the whole lift faster. Speed bench or speed anything is the biggest meme there is

No, I'm at 225 bp, 130 ohp

I've been stuck at 80 pounds for 5 reps for weeks. I try 82 pounds and only just today managed to get it off my chest for the 5th rep, couldn't get it past my head though. My sleep isn't that bad but it's the last weak link in my schedule.
