I have discovered a way to do preacher curls without a rack. You just get in a squatting position with your barbell, rest your elbows just ahead of your knees, and do curls. The weight on the bar makes it easy to lean back a little, it will hold you in place.

Preacher curls seem much more effective to me. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I struggle to actually isolate the biceps doing standing curls. I feel it more in my forearms.
