I think it's overall more work for your body, and your leg muscles are built for endurance so it takes a lot to wear them out. More reps, higher weight, and longer distances equals more energy expended.

I recommend upping your frequency. once I started squatting 3x per week, they started to become much less of a hated thing.
have now been squatting 3-4x per week, alternating between heavy and light squats, as well as back and front squats, or other variations.
Same but with deadlifts. Pull with a straight back and even with under 220 lbs my lower back feels like it's collapsing in on itself

I used to hate squats but after I started really working on my core I have progressed on my squats and now I look forward to do them.

I'm tall which makes them suck even more. I have to walk home on shakey legs. I don't give a shit about leg pump so i can't even check myself out properly.

You'll be fine. After your initial DOMS, the next session will be much easier on your body. It happens if I ever take a break from legs for even a week.
