Any vegan fits here? I went vegan about two months ago mostly for health reasons and it's hard to find information specifically for vegans. If you are, I would be interested in hearing about what you eat, your workout plan, etc.
>>
>>36397145
How about being specific?

Workouts don't change because one is vegan.
What information is difficult to find?
>>
I am also looking for workout cloths. Namely ones that say something about my veganism.

I want everyone to know my physique is possible without meat.
>>
Vegan for 7 years here. do yoga, pilates and some crossfit with my black transexual genderqueen partner Tyriniqua.
>>
>>36397178
Sorry, you're right. I should have been more specific. I was mainly curious about the diet. Trying to find a good vegan diet for bulking. I have seen a few vegan youtubers, like Vegan Gainz and NaturallyStephanie and they do a few videos on what they eat, but I haven't found much else.

Lentils is the key to a vegan diet
>>
Fellow veganbros
What are the staples of your diet to make sure you get enough protein? I eat a tonne of tofu, seitan and all that shit but shit gets boring after a while
>>
>>36397304
Thanks so much! I appreciate it.

>>
>>36397318
That's good because I really like lentils.
>>
>>36397347
How's that? I'm new to veganism and I'm also new to fitness. I'm a noob in both areas. I could use some help from people who have done both for awhile and have more experience.

>>
>>36397341
WELL GET FUCKING USED TO IT IF YOU WANNA BE /FIT/ VEGAN CUZ IT'S TOFU BEANS AND NUTS FOR YOU. Quinoa is good as well just try to get fancy
>>
Your go-to sources of protein:

>Beans (black beans are the best for protein and they are ridiculously high in fibre)
>Lentils
>Soy products, i.e. tofu, soy protein, soy-based meat replacements
>Vegan protein powders (ideally made of plant protein mixtures, so you're getting a variety of amino acids)
>Quorn is the best of the best. They have a few incredible vegan options that almost indistinguishable from the real thing if cooked properly.

And then of course you also get a decent amount of indirect protein from carb sources and veg
>>
>>36399391
Thank you :)
>>
I'd rather be a good person than a vegan.
>>
>>36401392
As I said before, I did it for health reasons. I can't digest animal fat as well as normal people. It causes bloating/indigestion.
>>
One of the most important things you can do as a vegan is making damn sure you get your fats - i recommend making a shake with coconut oil, flax seeds, chia seeds, almond/peanut butter, protein powder if you have/need it, and bananas for taste
>>
>>36401608
Thanks! I was high carb low fat vegan for the first two months but they advocate little to no protein and fat.
>>
Pea and rice protein combo is on par with whey. Mix them with almond milk and you're golden.

Linen oil linen oil linen oil.

Avoid seitan at all costs.
>>
>>36401820
I'll have to try almond milk, my staple has been soy.
>>
I eat a lot of soy nuts personally, wouldn't suggest it personally if you're not on a budget, but they are like 80g of protein in a package for $1 so that's pretty awesome.

Lentils though are a good bulking food that actually tastes good.
>>
>>36401860
I love lentils. My friend from Iraq makes the best lentil soup. I just don't know how to cook them, but I'll learn
>>
http://cookieandkate.com/2013/west-african-peanut-soup/

I make this but add lentils to it.

Cheap as fuck, tastes amazing, easy to make, can have as much protein as peanut butter/lentils you're willing to add.
>>
>>36401884
Thanks!
>>
>>36401883

Lentils boiled for 10 minutes then rinsed.

Add water, olive oil, salt, tomato paste and an onion and cook for some 20 minutes. Easy lentil soup, you can spice to taste.
>>
>>36401902
I appreciate the help :)
>>
>>36401834
I try to avoid soy when possible, it's possibly one of the least efficient sources and it's super hard to find anything that's actually ethical or gmo free. Also higher allergy risks. Soy a shit. Especially the mock meats they do. Uber processed and tastes like eraser gum.

Peas, lentils, spinach, asparagus, oats... There's a world of things to try. Vegan diet is all about getting creative, not about substitutes. Think of it as an incentive to eat stuff you wouldn't have without the practicality of dairy.

Don't try to emulate what you don't eat, look just behind that and see the whole spectrum of veggies seeds algae flours and oils.

I can guarantee non vegans would have a hard time picturing flour from anything else than wheat
>>
>>36401933
Please explain your reasoning behind your position on soy, because if your arguments fall along the lines I think they do, then those arguments are categorically wrong.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfFijCIoq8E

I'm pretty inclined to trust the world's strongest vegan with regards to the efficacy of soy.

>>
>>36397145
1) supplement b12 or eat fortified foods with it. bretty cheap and absolutely necessary

2)creatine is a cheap supplement that improves muscle performance and studies show it to improve mental capacity. usually it is synthetic.

3)make sure to hit your fiber macros. fiber makes shure that excess estrogen is literally shit out. hitting fiber macros should be easier for us vegans, but it is also more important as

4)soy contains phytoestrogen. it is a less potent form of estrogen and reacts weirdly in your body. while science argues if it does change your hormone levels, some individuals experienced adverse effects from consuming excessive amounts of soy (mostly by drinking soy milk). dont make soy your main/only protein source.

5)check out DHA. it is a compound that is important for optimal functioning of the brain. pretty much the only natural way to get it is to eat a lot of fish. most people (meateaters included) are deficient. do your own research here, IMO the only way to get it reliably in a vegan way is a DHA supplement (or fortified foods).

the got-to non vegan supplement for that is fish oil.

the only world record he had before has in the 105kg weight class. which he is unlikely to best as he iirc weights over 125kg now.

so, your post is not only wrong, but also... how is it relevant to the question if he is natty or not?

>>
The problem with soy isn't the phytoestrogen; it's the phytates, which are antinutrients.

In order to lower the levels of phytates, you need to ferment the soy. Thus, avoid processed soy stuff, tofu, whole soy beans, all that.

The only soy you should be eating is like tempeh and natto, but who the fuck can afford that shit
>>
>>36406170
You need to add a lot of fruit to that diet. Also, you can eat pastas, seitan (if you can find it or you can make it if you can find vital wheat gluten), nuts are always delicious.

if you need to add anything, make it oysters, as they don't have a CNS and are farmed in an environmentally friendly way generally.
>>
>>36406256

This is an NFL DT, 300 pound mountain who does a vegan diet. Not sure how good it is if you want to stay lean, he's a lineman so he's very muscular but also kind of fat. The problem I had with going vegan was getting leaner sources of protein, a lot of vegan diets are higher in carbs which is good for being builtfat like a DT but not so good if you want to be shredded. But if you're bulking, then maybe try something like pic-related

>>36401392

>>
>>36406936
You don't have to be there and watch over the fucking beans, sperglord. You do it in steps, and the total preparation time is 2-3 hours at most over 3 days. You can make a big batch and have it last forever, so you don't have to do it often. Saves a lot of money and gives you room to experiment if you want (you can use different types of beans and lentils, not just soy)
>>
>>36407107
Eating over your caloric needs makes you fat, regardless of what macros make up those excess calories. Is that really hard to understand?
>>
>>36407107

>oversimplifying the role carbs play in body composition
>>
>>36407672
no, but you do need to make sure that the temperature is constant
>>
>>36407842

>>36407910
I didn't say anything about the role carbs play, apart from they don't make you fat, which they don't. If anything, they help you retain lean mass was burning fat.

Seriously, you guys, Atkins was like a decade ago. Keep up with the rest of us.
>>
>>36407985
I think you misunderstood the post. Carbs don't make you fat, but it's hard to eat a low enough surplus AND get your protein needs with vegan sources. Since you need to eat more calories for the same protein, you gain more fat. It's not that carbs magically make you fat.

If you're weightlifting then yes. Most likely you'll need even more. You think that NFL linebacker got where he was off of 80 grams of protein a day? The only myth here is the vegan one that you can make gains with minimal protein.
>>

>You think that NFL linebacker got where he was off of 80 grams of protein a day?
Probably not, as idiots will never stop spouting memes.

>>
>>36408043
You can be complete nerd about it or just just experiment with it. I never killed mine and I never watched over it either. Here's a few tips: if you have floor heating in your bathroom, use it. If you have a room with a water heater, use it. If you have a dehydrator, use it. I even used my ex-gf lazy dog to keep fermenting food at a constant temp because he never moved. Use your imagination.
>>
>>36408142

I don't need a degree if I do my research from proper sources. You saw this thread...yesterday. I've been looking up veganism for..around five months, but I took the plunge only two months ago. If it's not healthy, how do people not only live to the average life expectancy, but in most cases, surpass it? They would die if they weren't getting the proper nutrients. Somehow, and I don't know how, they manage eating only plants.

>>36408828

I have gone pretty much vegetarian/vegan as I'm trying to cut for the summer. I'm still eating lunch meat but my dinners are mainly brown rice stir-fry with different mixes of veggies.
Not sure where eggs fall onto the spectrum of vegan or whatever but I'm still eating a couple eggs and a banana for breakfast.
I'll also eat a protein granola bar after I go workout in the afternoons/ a couple hourse before dinner.
Is this a decent diet? What other cutting tips do you guys have. I'm not against meat, I know boiled chicken breast is great. Anything else? I'm trying to slim down by mid-june. there is no theory

you guys totally misunderstand every single aspect of your arguments. it's fascinating.

the most important thing, though, it your utter misunderstanding of how omnivorism works.
you see, you idiots seem to think that being an omnivore means you're SUPPOSED to eat a certain amount of meat and a certain amount of plants.

that's idiotic. the truth is: what we need are nutrients, and omnivorism is an adaptation of opportunity. so, rather than being a requirement to eat some meat, the truth is that omnivorism is an adaptation that allows us to get nutrients from EITHER, almost entirely dependent upon what's available.

I was ten pounds overweight at the time of diagnosis. 5'3, 140 pounds, which is ten pounds over what is considered healthy. There. But just because I was TEN pounds overweight, is irrelevant. The point is, RIGHT NOW, I do not have my gallbladder and eating meat, dairy and eggs gives me indigestion, causes bloating, and can cause diarrhea because of too much fat. So, yes, I feel better on a vegan diet. It is not for everyone. I am not trying to force it on anyone. This thread is for people who were already vegan.

Been trying a vegan diet for about 7 weeks and added to my totals and lost about 2-3 lb of fat.

Im eating 3500 kcal a day and somehow lost weight. When i ate that amount and consume animal products i gained weight pretty quick.

Gotta love women; "BMI is pure unscientific bullshit" if it doesn't fit, "omg this isn't up for debate it's science" when it fits them.

And no offense, giving us a weight that conveniently scratches that BMI by 0.2 makes me think that 140 wasn't your max weight.

And last, you don't just magically get unhealthy when you cross the 25.0 line - thinking you don't get obesity effects at 24.8 is hilarious.
>>
>>36410123
That's really nice. :)
>>
>>36410203
I never said bmi was bullshit. Again, 25.0 is the cutoff for OVERWEIGHT, not OBESE. There is a difference. 30.0 is the start of an obese bmi. Being a little overweight -and I mean about ten pounds- should not give you obesity related illnesses.
>>
>>36410237
Thanks :)

But srs question why am i losing weight on high calories, yet still energetic and feel stronger.

Can you really build muscle and lose weight, or is it from shitting 6 times a day.
>>
>>36410277
I'm not really invested in this and I don't know anything about the topic either, I completely believe that it could've been BC and I tell my girlfriend not to get an IUD.

All I'm saying is that even small amounts of fat can have a huge impact on your body and BMI is nothing but an indicator.

You can have a BMI of 20 but if you have one pound of the bad belly fat fucking with your insulin or surrounding your liver, it can be just as bad as someone with a BMI of 30.

Anyway, not really what the thread was supposed to be about. If you're a girl, you don't need a ton of food and you don't need a ton of protein, so it's much easier to be vegan - there's nothing /fit/ related about it other than that you should count your calories. You'll find enough recipes and foods with 5 mins of googling.
>>
>>36410347
It's probably a mix of things:

1. Placebo effect when it comes to "feeling more energetic".
2. There are usually less hidden calories in vegan food, think of all the oil you use for omelettes, meat etc.
3. Most importantly: The calories stated on a food are guesswork, they're not scientifically accurate. This is especially the case with plant foods. For example, it's believed that while walnuts theoretically "burn" for 680kcal/100g, the body actually only absorbs 80% of those calories.
4. Vegan diets are less fat usually, and a stomach full of fat makes you perform worse in the gym.
5. It's not all that simple - maybe one day you're losing water weight after eating a lot of rice and make gains while "losing" weight, etc.
>>
>>36410347
you probably get a lot of calories from fiber, which you don't actually absorb, which would explain shitting 6 times a day.
>>
>>36410353
I agree with you, and I'm not saying I was completely healthy at the time, I just don't think that being ten pounds overweight is what caused my gallstones. I did not develop them until I got the IUD in, and I'd been the same weight for 3 years. I don't think it's a coincidence that shortly after I got it in, I developed gallstones. There is a reason gallstones are more likely in women. Thank you for your advice, I appreciate it.
>>

even more so for processed foods. food processing makes digestion easier and therefore dramatically increases the calories we can/will get from lets say 100 g of potatoes.
>>
>>36410536
That's true; I was just talking about the difference between animal-based (which we usually absorb really well) and plant-based (whcih we usually have a hard time absorving).
>>
>>36410536

Here's another: Vegan/vegetarian diets are associated with lower blood pressure.
>>
>>36410431
I think my diet was quite deficient before, very few veg or fruit most calories came from chicken and rice.

I would credit this to the greater energy, not so much that a vegan diet is better but for me allows me to eat better and get all my micronutrients.

Im already eating 7 meal a day, starting to feel like wealthy piano, gaining weight definitely feels harder.

Onlooker here who's familiar with that study. What's probably going to happen is someone will read the results summary and point out that the vegans in that study had a higher all-cause mortality than pescetarians, and go "a-ha! vegan a shit!" It should be pointed out that these are the numbers for both men and women combined. When you separate it by gender, male vegans came out as the healthiest group while female vegans struggled more, particularly with cardiovascular disease, which would affect their overall mortality rates as well. (table 4, in pic)

You might wonder why male vegans were so protected from heart disease while female vegans were at such a higher risk. This probably has to do with confounding caused by differing rates of hormone treatment in the women being studied. The study authors commented that "of postmenopausal women, far fewer vegans were receiving hormone therapy." Since hormone therapy also has an effect on heart disease in women, this could have biased the data against them when adjusted. If you look at the data for men as a more accurate measure, it's better in every way (even better heart health when not eating fish than eating fish).

Every veg was better off than the regular meat eaters.
>>
>>36410745
>the regular meat eaters.
If you compared any individual living a healthy and active lifestyle with the regular meat eater they would be healthier and better off statistically. This include individuals eating meat. Big difference between eating mackerel and eating Mickie D's, anon.
>>
>>36410852

By regular meat eaters I meant the people who ate meat regularly. This study took place in Loma Linda, California, a "blue zone" where the people are known for living healthfully and having longer lifespans than the rest of the US, including the meat eaters. McDonalds isn't an excuse in this case.

>>
Why do people think you cant make gains on a vegan diet?

Its easy to get enough protein, im eating 180-200g a day without much trouble.

What makes protein from a chickpea or broccoli inferior to that of a steak?
>>
>>36410985

You should be eating mostly beans and lentils in your meals for protein. Red lentils are GOAT.
>>
>>36402127
and from a person who has done both diets. it doesn't fuckin mater as long as you're getting your macros and exercising. the diet is just a tool for validation. of your're doing it for health reasons good for you, but no one needs to know, keep it to yourself
>>
>>36411035
Protein from plants is actually better for you than protein from meat. Protein from meat is slightly acidic so if you eat too much of it, it takes some of the calcium from your bones to make your blood more basic. Or so I've heard, I don't know the validity. I didn't see that in a medical journal.
>>
>>36410890
The point is that most vegans will a) pay more attention to things like food and lifestyle, b) will have higher socioeconomic status and c) will be much more likely to eat superfoods etc.

Basically, you need to compare people who have the EXACT same lifestyle and meal plan except that one person ADDS meat to it.

Because otherwise, yes, the person who eats tons of kale and walnuts etc. will come out on top. That says absolutely nothing about whether it's better to get your protein from meat or plants though, for example.
>>

Hardcover Christians are more moral than me in a lot of ways but it doesn't mean I become insecure because of it. Like fuck, that doesn't even make sense.

You're making too many assumptions to excuse the results. It's funny how before the science gets posted, everyone's opinion is "vegans are all sick and unhealthy and get no nutrients" and then afterwards it changes to "vegans are only healthy because they're all physically fit and eat lots of healthy food"

Even when we look at a population where everyone is known to have healthconscious behavior and diet, the people who have meat in their diet, and to a lesser extent dairy and eggs, are less healthy. Here's another study on healthconcious meat eaters vs vegetarians

http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/70/3/525s.full

They had the vegetarian participants recruit friends and family of similar socioeconomic status and lifestyle to be compared to. The mortality rates of the whole cohort were half that of the rest of the British population, so they weren't studying people with shitty diet and habits. The results still showed that vegetarians had significantly lower death rates, less cardiovascular disease, and less cancer.

Cardiovascular disease is the most obviously related to meat. What happens when people have the exact same lifestyle and meal plan except one adds meat? The one with the added meat has an added risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
