I mean, have you ever seen the calves of those cyclists? Sure, they're DYEL from waist up, but cycling is evidently a great calf workout.

You should try to walk on heels too, fucking sissy.

Seeing the countryside/outdoorsy, cycling marathons, God tier cardio fitness, social aspect, environmentally friendly travel, easily accessible. Why is picking up something heavy and putting it down in the same place considered a hobby anyway?

Bike thread? Cool!

I mountain bike and want to maintain my endurance, power, and technical skill on the bike but I want to start lifting to look better too. I don't want lifting to interfere with my riding though. Below is kind of how my schedule plays out. There is flexibility but this is usually how I try to do it. Tips and/or comments?

>Monday
>try to walk 2-3 miles at work distributed over my breaks
>short road ride after work, 30-45 minutes, interval training

>Tuesday
>try to walk 2-3 miles at work distributed over my breaks
>lift after work

>Wednesday
>try to walk 2-3 miles at work distributed over my breaks
>short mountain bike ride after work 1-2 hours, may do intervals depending on type of trails, if route has fun trails then focus on speed and technical riding

>Thursday
>try to walk 2-3 miles at work distributed over my breaks
>lift after work

>Friday
>try to walk 2-3 miles at work distributed over my breaks
>rest day

>Saturday
>long bike ride 3-5 hours, should be fun, lots of climbing, lots of going fast like Sanic downhill
>if I can't cycle then I'll run or lift

>Sunday
>long bike ride 3-5 hours, should be fun, lots of climbing, lots of going fast like Sanic downhill
>if I can't cycle then I'll run or lift

Nobody answered OP's question, I bike for cardio but am also interested if this could be counted as leg day as well.

Strength/resistance training will impact your endurance. Can't have it all friend. Why not just go on a cut to get shredded?
>>
>>36132036
What isn't a hobby these days?

>>36132146
Don't I need muscles to look shredded? If I go on a cut as a cyclist I'll just look more DYEL.

I third this question

>I bike for cardio but am also interested if this could be counted as leg day as well.
Do trx sessions count as curl day?
>>
I bike about 120 miles a week to commute to college.
>Calves get worked well and look damn good.
>Quads get some definition, but doesn't build adequate mass. Squats and supplemental exercises are a must

I think you need to bike uphill a ton or on max gear to get enough out of it

>>36132180

I used to ride a singlespeed mountain bike. Most of the trails I liked to ride involved a lot of climbing. I selected a gear that was a compromise between climbing and flats. I didn't have to push my bike up most of the trails. Didn't pedal when the bike was pointed down either because the gearing was too low, I had to rely on momentum and knowing when to pump the terrain. Riding on flat sections sucked because of how spinny the gear was. Anyways yes my legs were pretty big when I rode that bike for a year. Imagine you're doing one legged squats and it's actually pushing you forward. That's pretty much what it's like when you are standing and pedaling out of the saddle. If your bike has multiple speeds then start low and work your way up.

Practice intervals on a hill.
>lowest (biggest) rear cog for like 5 minutes while sitting
>click up 1-3 gears to higher cog (smaller) then stand and pedal at high intensity for 1-2 minutes
>figure out a way to vary this that works for you aftwards

>>
>>36132263
Would you rather be a DYEL like the guy on the left or be a manlet with enormous quads like him?
>>
Cycling is awesome. For the best leg workout, get yourself a good fixed gear and ride it brakeless. Don't forget good foot straps though.
So then you literally have to use your legs for everything, including braking, and you're always pedaling.
I lost 5 kg last summer and my legs are looking great.
>>
>>36132263
Based. My fucking legs hurt from leg day but I think I'm clearly not going hard enough.

Can you blame genetics for having shitty calves? There's a guy at my gym who can deads and squat 3pl8s but has small calves.
>>
>>36132263
pretty sure those are just sprinters
>>
I don't work legs at all and cycle on my rest days. I have bigger legs than 90% of /fit/, even though my upper body is DYEL.

not true. if your racing the fucking tour de france then you might wanna only work on endurance but for almost anything else strength training is needed to preform well. take my advice, i race bikes.
>>
>>36131781
are you fat? fat people often have great calves from lugging around all that weight all day
>>
>>36132109
Biked to work for three months (25 minutes to get there because I went as fast as possible, 30 or 35 minutes on the way back because I took my time), made my thighs blow up. Calves - not so much.

>>36133414
Say hi to gandalf for me
>>
>as a cyclist

its amazing for your calves but you absolutely need to be clipped in and have good stroke technique for it to touch them. and as you should know with cycling if you arent doing 30+mile rides you arent getting much done. that said a degree of intensity is required but all this shit is available online.

>>

if you go clipless with cycling shoes, your legs are basically stuck at one angle just like doing calf raises but only with a straight foot

with toe clips, you can actually change your foot angle
