I use it purely as a garnish on burgers or eggs. Never as a meal in itself.

Never mind, Syrian refugees are already doing that.

Porn has the highest risk for cancer out of all meats and pork protein is like 70% collagen, which is useless for building muscle.

>>
>>35999664
I'm not a dietitian but I was reading tons of paper on the stuff. The takeaway is still the age old everything increases and decreases your chance of cancer if you are wondering about that.

if you followed the WHO link, processed meat is a "proven" carcinogen, it increased risks like 18% (of the initial 1-2%), so my take it is pretty negligible and might just be statistical error. OTOH no one says anything about cured fish (actually you are encouraged to increase fish consumption), seeing the nitrosamines that are actually contributing to cancer are coming from the curing process.

And according to wikipedia: Endogenous nitrosamine formation can be inhibited by ascorbic acid.
>>
If your family has a history of high cholesterol then you should limit your saturated fat intake, other than that it's just meat

I don't know how you can look at that cancer research on processed meats and be like "yeah bacon, still gonna eat that"

If you want meat from a pig, go with pulled pork. Slow-cooking meat is supposed to attenuate some of the bad effects

And you're worried about a cut of pork. lol

Don't pull the cancer card, and act like it adds weight to anything. Cancer comes and goes whenever the fuck it feels like it. Bacon or not.

And don't give me that "It lowers your chances" bullshit either. The more we learn about it, the more we learn about something else that'll increase your chances. You don't win. Ever.

cholesterol is needed for testosterone, and there is very little evidence that dietary cholesterol increases your serum levels. Also HDL/LDL ratio is far more important than your total cholesterol.
>>
>>35999961
bacon is grouped together with other meat products. If you agree their methods were accurate (which were not) and believe their findings are not just propaganda, it is still entirely possible that only sausages or hot dogs or hams or whatever cause cancer. Grouping every processed meat together is very broad for those claims.
>>
>>36000030

You don't know what you're talking about.
>>
>>35999961

>Slow-cooking meat is supposed to attenuate some of the bad effects

Actually it worsens them. Two things lead to more carcinogen production in cooked meats; high temperatures, and long cooking times
>>

just correct the parts where you think is wrong
>>
>>35999701

SWEDEN YES
Good on ya, Sven!

Bacon is haram.
>>
>>36000234

"Cholesterol is needed for testosterone" mistakes dietary cholesterol with the cholesterol in your blood, which isn't going to get low enough by any means to be insufficient for testosterone production, "there's little evidence that dietary cholesterol increases serum levels" is also bullshit but not the only thing wrong with dietary cholesterol anyway, and HDL numbers aren't considered a reliable predictor of heart disease, while LDL is usually considered the most important marker to monitor

> meats cooked at high temperatures, especially above 300ºF (as in grilling or pan frying), or that are cooked for a long time tend to form more HCAs

>>36000571

>except studies show otherwise

You no show studies
>>
>>36000599

I'm not sure that logic checks out

> The formation of HCAs and PAHs varies by meat type, cooking method, and “doneness” level (rare, medium, or well done). Whatever the type of meat, however, meats cooked at high temperatures, especially above 300ºF (as in grilling or pan frying), or that are cooked for a long time tend to form more HCAs. For example, well done, grilled, or barbecued chicken and steak all have high concentrations of HCAs. Cooking methods that expose meat to smoke or charring contribute to PAH formation

Which is fine, but the research shows an association between processed meats and increased risk of cancer, not an association between all meat intake and increased risk of cancer. They're basically formulating an argument for why HCAs and PAH formation do not contribute to cancer

They even admit down the page that the HCA/PAH model only works on rodents and that population studies don't show the association
>>
>>36001179

Well, they say population studies haven't established a definitive link, not that they don't show an association. They say it's difficult to establish such a link with that type of research.

>One difficulty with conducting such studies is that it can be difficult to determine the exact level of HCA and/or PAH exposure a person gets from cooked meats. Although dietary questionnaires can provide good estimates, they may not capture all the detail about cooking techniques that is necessary to determine HCA and PAH exposure levels. In addition, individual variation in the activity of enzymes that metabolize HCAs and PAHs may result in exposure differences, even among people who ingest (take in) the same amount of these compounds. Also, people may have been exposed to PAHs from other environmental sources, such as pollution and tobacco smoke.

>Nevertheless, numerous epidemiologic studies have used detailed questionnaires to examine participants’ meat consumption and meat cooking methods to estimate HCA and PAH exposures. Researchers found that high consumption of well-done, fried, or barbecued meats was associated with increased risks of colorectal (14), pancreatic (15, 16), and prostate (17, 18) cancer.

This just in: The sun causes cancer. Everybody stay inside and lift at night.

For fucks sake, disregard 90% of "this can cause cancer" studies, they're either horse shit or they have small sample sizes and as such are useless for the majority of people. Can't scale 20 people up to the entire world.

Just focus on it's nutritional values, which are fine, and here's the kicker, in moderation.

You can't eat bacon every day, but once every second day as a start to the day with some egg whites and rye toast, or at night on a burger made of lean ground beef or chicken breast, you will be fine.

The biggest thing to worry about is cholesterol, fat from the oils both used to cook it and that are produced from it, and sodium intake.

Almost any kind of food is fine to eat, provided you eat it in moderation. Wanna drink the carbonated jew? Go for it, but don't drink more than 1-2 cans a day, and keep up constant exercise as they're empty calories . Wanna eat cake? Go for it, have a slice once a week/every few days after dinner. but don't scoff the whole thing in a sitting unless you're on a dirty fucking bulk.

/fit/ is so fucking anal about only eating the healthiest shit that they forget to enjoy the finer (or shittier) things in life and forget how to eat in moderation.

That being said, I stick to a rigid food regimen myself, but that's because I'm a recovering fatass and I know I don't want to lose my willpower and eat shit again.

Pretty calorie dense, some protein, a lot of saturated fat, trace carbs. So far it's not so bad, don't pig on it and you'll be fine.

Jesus fucking christ.. /fit/ has really become such a fucking shithole. Not a single person directly answered OP.

How bad is bacon? Like scooby said: people who continue to ask if a food product is bad for you are never going to make it.

Pick up the package. Turn it around and look at the fucking nutrition facts. Holy fuck its not that hard.

Bacon usually contains alot of sodium and fat, eat it moderately. There are better foods to eat for building muscle or cutting.

Every type of meat has some linkage with cancers but the effect is so small and cancer is an incredibly unpredictable desease, dont worry about it.
>>
>>36003178

>Every type of meat has some linkage with cancers

Do vegetables cause cancer?
>>
>>35999664
Pros:
>Has protein
>Don't need much if you're eating for the flavor
>Can offend vegans, PETA and certain religions with your sandwich
Cons:
>Not a lot of protein
>High Sodium
>Can be expensive compared to other proteins (which also contain more protein anyways)
IIFYM:
>Very High in Fats (Can even cook other food in bacon fat for extra fat if you're on some super-bulk or something)
>0 Carbs
Depending on what you want out of it and how you use it, it isn't the worst thing you can eat, but it's not a great source of brotein and you probably won't suffer from a salt deficiency if you skip the bacon.
Lots of flavour, but can get lost if you mix it up with other shit. Use it as a "finishing touch" rather than a main ingredient or a seasoning.
>>

Isothiocyanates in broccoli can damage DNA. That could lead to cancer.

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/cbf.3106/abstract

Lots of benefits from certain types of vegetables come from hormesis. It's definitely possible to overdo this.
>>
>>36003331

>It's definitely possible to overdo this.

They've induced cancer in animals through lots of broccoli feeding? High broccoli consumption has been associated with increased cancer risk?
>>
>>36003398
For whole broccoli not that I'm aware of. I doubt you could get any animal to eat enough broccoli to do this in a reasonable span of time either so there's the ethics review board to deal with force feeding as well. Unless there's some kind of specialist herbivore for crucifers, though that would've probably evolved defenses against high dietary loads of these compounds anyway. But that it can damage dna at high doses is reason to doubt its safety.

>High broccoli consumption has been associated with increased cancer risk?
I don't think there is a sufficient number of people eating a half a kilo of raw broccoli a day or more for prolonged periods of time to do statistics on
>>

>That motherfucker that always comes in to a discussion about if something is healthy or not and says "EVERYTHING IS UNHEALTHY"

You is a dumb fuck and you should stop posting your fucking nonsense
>>
>>36003746
I never said everything is unhealthy. I advocated for moderation in what you eat, rather than strict enforcement of a diet regimen. If you're a normal person with no mental deficiencies and average willpower, eat that cake every now and then, just don't eat all of it.

I'm also advocating against this stupid "x gives you cancer" bullshit that's spread across the internet like wildfire. News flash, taking a phone call gives you cancer. Breathing in second hand smoke walking past a smoking area gives you cancer. Driving a car gives you cancer.

Cancer is in every single thing and nothing you can do can change that. Simply eat foods in moderation, sticking to obviously healthy food as staples and adding in foods that might not be so healthy as a special occasion kind of thing.

treat them like that time your dad took you to get pizza or a burger, rather than as some unholy abomination that will steal your gains, your girlfriend and your job.

What is the every other day thing based on? I don't eat a lot of it, but I eat it every day. My normal breakfast is 1 slice of bacon, 2 eggs, 100g oats and 40g bran flakes. If it's only 1 slice, does it really matter if I eat it daily?
>>
>>36003904
Based on nothing but my own perceptioon of what moderation is. It has a lot of cholesterol and sodium, so much (76% of daily intake on sodium at 100grams) that I would only eat it every second day as it would severely limit my macros and my daily intake of sodium.

Of course if you only eat one slice at less than 100 grams a day, go for it. But when most people eat bacon, even people on /fit/ it's at least 100 grams if not more of the stuff. Bacon is just so hard to not eat more of.

I read up a lot after a family member died from cancer on why processed foods were bad for cancer and processed meats, in particular bacon, came up time and time again.

One of the few safe processed meats in spam.

Now the only bacon I'll touch is the stuff I make myself from pork belly. It's also 100% tastier.
