I'm cutting at 1800 and get chicken, rice, potatoes, eggs, veggies, spices, and cooking staples (mirin, sake, soy sauce, miso, etc.) for about $40/week. I'm living in Kyoto, so most of the prices are higher, but I make do and hit 40/40/20.

Buy in bulk, hit up farmer's markets, stock up when you see good sales, eat more vegetables, don't buy anything that's not real food that had more processing done to it than killing it or picking it and washing it.
