Lol Starting Strength was designed for football players. Every workout program for football players is designed around the bench squat and power clean. Also Brian Cushing did West side for skinny bastards. He's actually one of the poster child's for the program back when he was in hs trying to put on weight for college.

Heavy compounds.

Most football strength programs are closest to starting strength. Built around the bench, squat, DL, and clean, 2x/week, and pull-ups, dips, rows, press, 1x/week.

They also do conditioning (sprints) and explosive work (plyos), and eat shitloads of food. All colleges have "training table", essentially an cafeteria that's specifically for athletes. At smaller schools, it's only dinner, but for big-time, D-1 universities, it's at least lunch and dinner.
