I have disproportionally big calves. Most of it is probably because I have this thing ever since I can remember that I always run around on tiptoes. And when I'm standing around I wiggle up and down by a cm on my toes. That and I used to be pretty fat.

In my limited experience, calves respond better to lower weight/higher reps than most muscle groups. Not even trolling. Jumping rope for 15-20min while consciously staying on the balls of my feet gets my calves a lot more sore than lifting heavy weights with them-- not saying to avoid lifting heavy weights with them altogether...
